  • WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Good news for ageing hippies: smoking pot may stave off Alzheimer’s disease.

New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.[URL=”http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:commonPopup%28%27/news/newsPhotoPresentation.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&imageID=2006-10-05T212814Z_01_NOOTR_RTRIDSP_0_OUKOE-UK-MARIJUANA.XML%27,%20560,%20535,%201%29″%5D

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana’s active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.

THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.

The researchers said their discovery could lead to more effective drug treatment for Alzheimer’s, the leading cause of dementia among the elderly.

Those afflicted with Alzheimer’s suffer from memory loss, impaired decision-making, and diminished language and movement skills. The ultimate cause of the disease is unknown, though it is believed to be hereditary.

Marijuana is used to relieve glaucoma and can help reduce side effects from cancer and AIDS treatment.

Possessing marijuana for recreational use is illegal in many parts of the world, including the United States, though some states allow possession for medical purposes.

    I´ll skinn up a big J on the moment!raaa 😉

I was reading an interesting article in New Scientist (last edition) about natural highs and there was an interesting point about salvia divinorum attatching to the Kappa opiate receptor in the brain, and causing halucinations, as there is an increase in the number of Kappa receptors in latter stage alzheimers and they draw similarities between alzheimers sufferers psychosis and the halucinations experienced in salvia users.

I wonder if stimulation of receptors causes long term shutdown (as seen with dopamine & serotonin receptors in heavy long term users of E cocaine and speed) and this is somehow protective against alzheimers

What this might mean in terms of cannabis users is they are less likely to suffer alzheimers because they have fucked the part of their brain related to this disease (The part of the brain that gives us halucinations) so if this theory is true its nothing to be happy about it simply means damaging your brain prevents you from damaging it another way, though it does throw up some interesting areas for exploration in terms of treatment and prehaps (JUST PREHAPS) a little of some things might be helpful

untill we have some randomised controlled trial of sativex with alzheimers patients who can tell.

and another random theory – is the damage from alzheimers prevented because they are used to forging new connections in the relevant area from hallucinating when smoking cannabis? so when damage occurs they reroute more effectively?

yet another report of a banned substance being of great benefit to us

wouldn’t matter if weed could restart your heart, immunise you from cancer or remove bullets from your face after you’d been shot, it’d still be fuckin illegal :mkay:

A drug, broadly speaking, is any chemical substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function[5]. There is no single, precise definition, as there are different meanings in medicine, government regulations, and colloquial usage. There are different types of drugs available in the market in that some are harmful to body and some are protector of body .
