  • this is nothing to do with parties but i thought i post it as it shows how our lives are not our own in many ways

we’re off to sweden in August to visit the family, show off our five and a half week old daughter and get married

    or so we thought

being born here to a British father and Swedish mother has left our little girl in a citizenship anomily

we applied for a British passport (new born babies have to have a passport)…she was born here, her dad is British, and we all live here

she can’t have a British passport because her mother (my partner) doesn’t have ‘indefinate leave to remain in the UK’ stamped in her passport, nor does she have a residence permit

she can only get the ‘indefinate leave to remain’ stamp if she successfully claims refugee status – which she can’t do as she isn’t being persecuted (much) in this country or in sweden

she can get a residence permit – but her nationality (and that of all EU citizens) permits her to reside here already – so it is of no benefit to anyone…

if she applied for one, the process takes 6 months, costs money and includes hearings at the home office!!!

the upshot of it all is that my five and half week old daughter is an illegal alien…(one to add to Blair’s ‘570,000’)

she cannot have british citizenship, but equally she cannot leave the country without a passport

British Immigration, UK Passport Service and the Home Office are:

    • full of shit
    • rude and ignorant
    • stupid
    • mindless drones working for a dysfunctional system that does not benefit the general public
    • and one bloke i spoke to after 4 hours on hold sounded like Papa Lazaru

anyone else ever feel like going and living in a cave in morroco or somewhere?

they haven’t moved on since the 1970s then – or got worse… ( my parents did all the immigration stuff legally and it took years, and at every stage the people they dealt with made it quite clear they did not really want them to be in the United Kingdom.

its no better in other countries and has got worse since 9/11 – when my mum went back to Malaysia recently Malaysia’s authorities were no better renewing her passport (they made comments about her dyeing her hair and that she was too old to be a teacher etc)

when I went to the airport I could see the way the world really is – you’d think all the people would be happy that they could afford to go on a plane and see relatives/friends in other nations etc but everyone from different races was scowling at each other and suspicious. The cops and rentaguards were actually looking worried. – not because of terrorism (they don’t display guns now so the alert must have gone down a stage) but because they could also sense the hate and anger in everyones eyes.

I know its London but I’ve spent a lot of time in London and been to Heathrow loads in my life to meet relatives etc or go travelling. I’ve never seen the airport like this before! It used to be all smiling Asian families from all corners of the continent, from chubby Chinese babies to old Indian grandmothers, now it looked like an airport where people were escaping a country in civil war…

unfortunately a lot of the people who work for HM Immigration do so because they want the borders stronger and less immigration etc – its a semi-uniformed service with investigative and executive powers (i,e they can nick people) like the Police or Revenue and Customs with all the problems that that entails – you always get those who want a bit of power over others.

Ditto with the Home Office ; people who take these jobs often do so because they believe in strong government.

I’ve heard of people resigning from stress from enforcement roles because they are not being allowed to nick or investigate enough people and blaming it on “political correctness etc”

The problem with bigots is when they have more braincells than the usual knuckle-dragging thugs (and there are sadly some intelligent ones) they know how to get and use power.

I was initially shocked this would happen in an EU nation – but knowing how Euro-sceptic Britain has become this hardly surprises me…. OTOH Britain does everything possible to chery pick the “free market” bits of being in the EU but duck out of the “socialist” bits of being in the EU – yet won’t actually pull out altogether like Norway…..

its also a very subtle way of discouraging inter-racial relationships and/or making them difficult when they do happen ……

OTOH I bet this will also happen in other EU countries with the way the EU is breaking down and politics in some nations shifting to the right (which seems to be merely a backlash because rich europeans realise they now have to share our wealth with the countries we “conquered” in the Cold War which they were hoping would merely be a source of cheap labour and young girls to be traded as commodities 🙁 🙁 )

Cold War 2 on the way I wonder?

    Harsh… and ludicrous! << Sp?

Hope you get things sorted and the rest of the plans (wedding etc) run smoothly for you.

my family have been dealing with HM immigration as one of my relatives is studying here – he works for NHS now so he’s been cleared but as he was coming from an Islamic country he had a proper grilling from the authorities.

not sure about babies but we had to send all his college details and a statement of what he was doing in the UK – and again the attitude the authorities had was “not another one coming in…”

ISTR a discussion about the passport issue on SJ (some ppl wanted to go to Frenchtek but didn’t have passports)

apparently you can leave the UK without a passport and many EU countries no longer do border checks – its getting back in which is the problem!

the reason its fucked up in the UK is because the last Government, goaded by a xenophobic and eurosceptic media and public, refused to fully implement the schengen agreemment whereby we could travel without borders, and this goverment refuses to become more progressive when elections are being fought on immigration issues..

you can leave and re-enter the UK without a passport, as long as you are in possesion of another photo ID (from a list of acceptables)… I have a French work permit with my photo on it – even though i don’t need one as I have the right to live and work in France due to my nationality, I was required to have one at every step of the way (such as insuring my bicycle!) – a photo driving license is also (legally) enough to travel within the EU… not every passport controller will like that, and they might make you miss you connection, but they can’t get out of it if you want to be insistant… although I’ve only tried it in UK, France and Spain

GL, i symapthise fully with your family / friends / anyone dealing with the arseholes in Immigration / Home Office… :group_hug

I volunteer with the Devon Refugee Support Group… 3(!) of my foster brothers come from formerly war-torn countries… many friends have been forced to do preposturous things to prove they are who they say they are (to the point where they start to think “perhaps I’m not really who I think I am)

and obviously my baby daughter is not exempt from a grilling from Immigration… only to be denied her birthright :you_smart

so I do understand (what it’s like)
