  • Heard these were brought into effect for Glastonbury. I saw reports of people being pulled over on the way there and being tested for various substances.

This could cause a lot of problems for free parties as they are generally in locations which are not accessible by public transport or by foot/bicycle.

Obviously the way to combat this is don’t take anything and drive afterwards, but I know a lot of people who do take drugs at a party and then drive home afterwards, usually after they have had some rest so although the drugs aren’t effecting their ability to drive they may still fail the test.

Does anyone know how these machines work and how sensitive they are? as drugs like cannabis stay in your system for a long time.

Are there any methods to fool the test?
(eg with the breath analyser for drink driving you have the “ol’ 2 pence in ya mouth” trick)

if they are “electronic sniffer dogs” as used outside clubs etc they are unfortunately really sophisticated pieces of kit – like mini spectrometers (the devices used in university labs to check what a chemical is). You just need to pick up a package containing drugs and they can trigger…

I am not aware of any way to defeat them. However they are very expensive (about £25,000-30,000) and not all forces have them. I think the evidence still needs to be backed up by a urine or blood test – but its enough to get you taken down the station and your friends stranded (I think this is what the cops are going for – the inconvenience/scare factor)

there was a report on BBC news about the launch of these… the two MP’s who launched them then proved positive for drugs during the demonstration

seems there is some need for a bit of tuning, as at present they detect such miniscule quantities of drugs that anyone who has handled money, or touched a door handle could test positive

it happened in the Welsh Assembly. this is a statement from Heddlu Gwent Police

    GWENT POLICE PRESS STATEMENT

In response to recent media reports regarding cannabis tests carried out at the Welsh Assembly today, Gwent Police have issued the following statement:

The Ion track machine, purchased by Monmouthshire and Torfaen Police and the Monmouthshire Community Safety Partnership, is an effective and successful crime reduction and awareness-raising tool. The sensitivity of the machine means that it can detect a teaspoonful of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and the ease with which cross contamination can take place, for example, simply by the touch of a door handle, means that it is not and has never intended to be a prosecution tool. The device was displayed at the recent force open day and a number of people showed positive results as a result of cross contamination. It must be borne in mind that anyone taking the test can test positive as a result of cross contamination. Mr Graham and Mrs Hart took the test voluntarily.

but although it can’t be used as a prosecution tool, it can be used an an excuse to search the driver or passengers and arrest them if further substances are found….

But if u have a drive control and u’r poitiv for a test aplied on your finger, than they bring u immediately for a blood detection which gave the info if u are consuming or if u only have been in contact with a drug, the quantities detected in the blood will separate those cases.

15 years later, and the cops in England are now not just using effective blood testing systems (as well as swabs), they are tracking free party rig vans with drones… (they are also picking off more and more drivers around festivals or just on the Monday after a heavy weekend..)

Fucking hell……tbh though people shouldn’t be driving under the influence of any intoxicant and I’d rather they were taken off the roads.
