In the past, Mr Brunstrom has said drugs laws are out of date and that the police are engaged in a battle which they cannot win.

He is now campaigning for drugs to be legalised, and for the class A, B and C system to be scrapped.

Mr Brunstrom’s suggestions have already been criticised by some politicians.
In a report to be presented to the North Wales Police Authority next Monday, he says the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 should be replaced by a new “Substance Misuse Act”.

The chair of the authority, councillor Ian Roberts, said there would be a “full and frank debate” on the issue.

In the report Mr Brunstrom writes: “if policy on drugs is in future to be pragmatic not moralistic, driven by ethics not dogma, then the current prohibitionist stance will have to be swept away as both unworkable and immoral….
“Such a strategy leads inevitably to the legalisation and regulation of all drugs”.

His report was prepared in response to the HM Government Consultation paper “Drugs: Our community, your say”, and the forthcoming Welsh Assembly Government consultation on the all Wales substance misuse strategy.

Personally i think the bloke is a complete twat,

but this seems a sensible thing that he wants to do for a change

(mod edit – duplicate of news article removed)

so what do you reckon to this guys>?

i reacon……get a new title, he doesnt wanna legalise drugs he wants to change the acts and laws to do with them, and this topic has been talked about for years, good to hear someone major talking about them, wwhat ever they do to how illegal drugs are , we are all gonna keep on taking them

i read that in a paper today, they bolded out the “ALL”.

various senior cops worldwide have suggested changes to drug law but unfortunately the one thing lots of nations agree on is that drugs should be illegal :you_crazy

needs a proper UN debate before there can be any progress….

North Wales Police Authority is to meet to decide whether it will support a campaign by its chief constable for drugs to be legalised.

Richard Brunstrom wants the authority to back his calls to scrap the current drugs law, legalise most drugs and bring in a new system to control them.

His views have been described by the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) as “a counsel of despair”.

Mr Brunstrom’s report has provoked a mixed reception from politicians.

North Wales Police Authority has backed a review of drug laws after its chief constable urged legalisation.

Richard Brunstrom asked the authority to back his calls to scrap current laws, legalise most drugs and bring in a new system to control them.

While it agreed to support the report – to go to the Home Secretary as part of UK-wide consultation – it did not say current laws should be scrapped.

A senior police officers’ body called legalisation “a counsel of despair”.
Mr Brunstrom called the fight against drugs unwinnable but said he did not want “an anarchic free-for-all”.
He said there was a battle with “the flat earthers” who refused to look at the evidence suggesting drugs laws need a radical change.

The chief constable said his report was not a “crusade or proactive – it is a response based on a degree of radicalism”.

The authority agreed that his report should go to the UK Government and the Welsh Assembly Government, which is about to conduct its own drugs consultation.

It also said there should be a review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, with the possible replacement of a Misuse of Substances Act regulating all drugs, including nicotine and alcohol based on a new hierarchy of harm.

The authority further agreed to consider affiliation with the lobby group Transform Drug Policy Foundation.
Before the meeting, Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood told BBC Wales’ Politics Show that Mr Brunstrom was right to raise the issue.
