  • just in case anyone thinks – “well if free parties are shut down it doesn’t matter because we can always do licensed clubs” – think again

the PEL laws are being linked with the ASBO laws and extended

At the recent Labour Party conference Tony Blair announced that there was to be more anti-social behaviour legislation, and this to be implemented before the end of the year. I notice no old codgers heckled this bit of the conference and got put outside by the bouncers, and if the Tories were in power rest assured they would be even worse – “small governement” always seems to be backed by “large enforcement“of laws against those who don’t fit in with 100% free market ethos…

most of the planned laws involves giving the Police the right to decide there and then whether a licensed event should continue or a pub be allowed to trade, rather than cops just producing a report for the Council to decide at a later date (and thus giving the venue/promoters some leeway)

it could result in a licensed club night being shut down just because a local has called 999 due to a few moosers snorting a crafty line in the car park, or chavs (who were not even wanted in the first place) starting a noisy brawl outside the venue when ejected

you could spend hundreds on a night and just a handful of people who don’t know the score or have attended your night merely to cause trouble could fuck it up for you

it could end up in TSG cops switching off the power to the club system and herding the punters out with shields, batons if necessary, and many of the rules are specifically intended at addressing the “problem” of a “drug culture at clubs”

already Avsom (Bristol) police have launched “pre-emptive” strikes against licensed pubs where they think “rowdy young people” can be found, or drugs may also have been used; you’re having a pint with your mates and next thing you know there are cops everywhere asking for ID, nicking people who are a bit “too merry” and searching people with the electronic sniffer dogs

unfortunately with the chav/violence culture on the streets nowadays i can understand why things have come to this; but its worth all promoters being aware as I can see these new laws being also used to squash licensed dance music events if we are not careful..

good call, gl. do you have any links to the info regarding law changes? we have never had the police called to a clubnight, and i dont think it happens to much tbh, except in town centre pits like yates’s etc, which to be honest need to be sorted out.

i think the police generally respect doormen, and leave it up to them to deal with most situations. obviously serious incidents like stabbings or an OD would be dealt with by police, but most clubs dont have much in the way of neighbours, and if they do they know what theyre in for when the move in next to a club,so i doubt there would be many 999nimby’s spoiling fun either.

still, tony is good at changing the goal posts, i never thought id see loitering reintroduced as a crime, i remember being amased it ever was one when i was 6. so only time will tell how far this planned police state will be taken.

    fingers crossed, eh?

Up here there is Studio 24 has been a nightclub venue for 25 yeras or so…and then some clever designers built luxury flats around it and failed to meet planning permission guidelines about sound proofing. Basically its all the developers fault and now the studios might be getting shut down for good. Anyway read a bit more here…

    Help save the studios.

its certainly true much of the clampdowns are aimed at the “new gin palaces” that sprung up in most areas following the mid-90s clampdown on urban music venues and the pushing of people back to the pubs – but there is definitely a move to keep an eye on music based clubs as well due to the drugs element.

The cops may grudgingly respect bouncers; but only due to a common “hard man” culture, and they also consider bouncers as a potential source of gang-related criminal activity

The recent phenomenon of violent behaviour including firearms crime associated with certain genres of urban music (such as grime/garage) hasn’t exactly helped matters. Lots of cops and locals in areas where clubs have been blighted by this are simply saying “the clubs were given a chance, and they fucked it up. Why give them another, particularly when people are being hurt and killed?”

The proposed extensions giving more power to the Police were announced by Tony Blair at the Labour Party Conference. They are already being implemented by the Home Civil Service (Whitehall) and may well be law very soon.
