http://www.archive.org/details/PLASTIC_
PLASTIC (Originally entitled, “PLASTIC: A Trip Through The Membrane”) was originally performed at The LAB in San Francisco in October 2002. The piece is a techno-fetish ritual exploring the consequences of security, driven by the events of 9/11/2001 and the American psychic response to the disaster. Entering audience members were subjected to a security checkpoint at which they were scanned and probed by the Nurse character, after which they were allowed to pass through the Membrane leading to the seating area, itself surrounded by membranes with moving projections. Audience members Inside could see, through a hidden security camera, the faces of those Outside being judged at the checkpoint. After the performance, the audience was itself wrapped in plastic and had to use small boxcutters to escape.
PLASTIC is the product of extensive collaboration between eight artists including programmers, electronic audio and visual artists, a Butoh dancer, actors, costumers, and many others. Quadrophonic sound and four coordinated projections were generated live by performers, while four cameras were deployed in the space to feed a live documentary mix which was used as the basis for the movie.
