  • I recently was diagnosed with ADHD and my psychiatrist prescribed me adderall XR 15 mg. I am supposed to take 1 every morning for the first week, 2 the second week, 3 the third week, and 4 the fourth week to see which dose is most effective.
I am haven’t even finished with the first week and I am already experiencing some really awful side effects. I can’t even imagine taking 60mg of this stuff. My concerns are: extremely powerful heartbeat (I feel like my heart is going to beat right out of my chest), horrible insomnia (which I have a problem with anyways) even though I am so utterly exhausted physically and mentally I can’t seem to sleep – if I do fall asleep it’s for only 2-4 hours and when I wake up I am wide awake, sore muscles (which I am sure the lack of sleep doesn’t help), complete loss of appetite (I didn’t have much of an appetite before so this concerns me as I have lost 5 pounds in less than a week),nd air-headedness (this didn’t start until at least 3 days of sleep deprivation).

I have researched a bit online to see what other people experience, and it seems like these side effects are pretty typical, but it’s really freaking me out (I also have GAD). I feel like I am going to go into cardiac arrest or lose my mind if I don’t sleep for a legit amount of time. My doctor said to wait at least one and a half to two weeks to get used to the med, but I can’t imagine getting used to it if I am supposed to increase my dose every week… I am 24 and weigh 97 pounds, am I right in my thinking that 60mg at once would be much too high of a dose for me? I have an extremely fast metabolism, so why does the stuff seem to stay in my system for a ridiculous amount of time?

Any personal experience or knowledge would be extremely helpful and very much appreciated.

It does seem to me that you are being logical and this may be an important issue – but, as an unqualified person, I must insist that you talk to your doctor about it, and probably your psychiatrist too.

“Mood stablisers” don’t actually take away your feelings but reduce your reaction to them, although the exact mechanism varies with each one (the chemical shape bonds to certain receptors in the brain – so similar shaped chemicals have similar effects).

Being able to cope with daily life is the goal of any treatment, and if your drugs are giving you a hard time, consult the supplier (doctor and psychiatrist). The most relevant information guide on Adderall that I could find is here… dextramphetamine. Supposed to take it just after you wake up, it runs you through the day until out of energy, then sleep;-

I should have mentioned that before I was prescribed adderall, I tried concerta. For the first 4-5 days it really helped me focus, especially in school & working on homework after school. I normally would spend 6+ hours a night “working” on homework; I would start and work for about an hour or so, take a break to do some stuff because I could not sit for longer than that, then start again. With both adderall and concerta I have been able to sit and work on my homework for the entire time it takes me to get it done, and I get it finished much faster because I’m not constantly re-reading things or getting distracted by the tiniest things. The problem with concerta started after the first few days, and it made me extremely depressed and suicidal. My doctor advised me to quit taking it immediately so I did. I didn’t experience any of the side effects that I have been with adderall, and my doctor said he had never had a patient get depressed or suicidal while taking concerta, but he supposed everyone is different. The adderall hasn’t made me depressed at all yet (knock on wood) but I don’t know if I can handle these side effects for another week and a couple days… Did anyone else have a bad experience when they first started taking adderall but work through it successfully? If so, what did you do that helped you cope with it? My doctor AND my family think I am just overreacting (which is very possible, I do it all the time, the wonders of anxiety…) and need to give it a chance, but I don’t know how long these side effects are going to last. I’ve heard everything from a week or two up to a few months… Which I guess goes to prove what my doctor said about everyone being different. Do the side effects slowly decrease after you have been taking the adderall longer?

Well it’s basically amphetamines you have been prescribed, which is a stimulant, so it’s really no surprise you can’t sleep/eat as that’s the main effects of it. Similar drugs were given to pilots to keep them awake in long flights in the past and another similar drug is used in some types of diet pills. If you’re really not getting on with the pills, tell your doc you don’t want them or you want to try a smaller dose. You would get used to the effects more as time goes on, but some people just simply don’t get on with certain drugs.

    Avoid
•If you have an allergy to dextroamphetamine, amphetamine, or any other part of this drug.•Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs. Make sure to tell about the allergy and what signs you had. This includes telling about rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.•If you have any of these health problems: Both attention deficit/hyperactivity problems and Tourette’s syndrome or tics, drug abuse, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, nervous state, overactive thyroid disease, or structure problems of the heart.•If you have taken isocarboxazid, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine in the last 14 days. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (eg, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine) must be stopped 14 days before this drug is started. Taking both at the same time could cause risky high blood pressure.•If you are breast-feeding.

Your psychiatrist sounds like a fucking muppet to me. But, get their explanation in writing before you are tempted to SUE THEIR ARSE OFF.

I have talked to my psych already, and he said that these side effects are pretty common and to give it at least a couple weeks for my body to get used to it. Having anxiety, I’ve taken just about every SSRI drug out there for it, and I have experienced some nasty side effects before, but not like this.

I actually quite like my psych, he finally prescribed me lexapro, which has done absolute wonders for my anxiety, and he also helped me get myself off of benzos completely. Actually my family doctor is the idiot. He put me on BOTH xanax and valium at the same time – he wouldn’t prescribe a sleeping pill, so I was to take xanax during the day as needed and valium before I went to bed. Needless to say, this lowered my seizure threshold & I began sleepwalking almost every night (sleepwalking can be a mild form of a seizure).

Well, perhaps your psych needs a new job. Like reading consultant;-

Thank you for the information! (:
I am in school studying to become an MA (it’s only my second month, so I am not extremely knowledgable though) and we take vitals every day, and mine are in the same range they always were. I do think that because it’s a stimulant, it is making my anxiety worse, like with any stimulant, and that could be a large cause of my discomfort with these side effects. The only difference in my heart is it feels like it is beating really hard, but not fast.

Controversial view here, but here goes anyway…..ADHD doesn’t exist! It’s a bullshit term dreamed up so that docs and psychiatrists can stick more people on medication and get commission from the drug companies as a ‘reward’ (especially true in the USA). Like I say, it’s controversial, but most of the people I know who have kids that have been diagnosed with ADHD are people who can’t be bothered to do any fucking parenting, and would rather give their kid a label & have them drugged up for their entire life, than address the real issue.

i would say that disorders of the mind especially in children are hard to understand and know whats best for the child… kids can be really nuts and this can be really distressing and with no escape for the parents, so i’d be hard pushed to blame parents from this angle… but yeh completely ridiculous situation with inferred pressure of big drug companies. it does seem sad wen u get that ‘i can’t trust anyone feeling’ … oh well, too bad

Woo an adderall thread, funny i can get some 15mg XRs… was always interested in prescription amp and I haven’t touched amp for 5 years. Only i did that meth a few months back.

Amphetamine is a truly horrible drug, speaking to a girl right now actually who’s on a chronic comedown from it… She sent me a picture of a massive load of powder saying ‘SHALL I DO IT?’ .. I said no, but you won’t listen anyway so have fun. 12 hours later I ask ‘was it worth it’… her answer ‘no’.

Very true mate, sad situation as you say. And you’re right, kids can be mental, some can be right little bastards, but surely any decent parent would want to work through that with their child rather than give them a chemical cosh to merely suppress their behaviour?

the trouble is under the label of medicine, parents will turn a blind eye… just as with edible products with minimal nutritional value and chemicals added but with aggressive ‘happy’ branding… r u a bad parent if u take everything at face value?… i have no idea but at least u help the economy… now u can afford to buy those prada sunglasses to go with your big bangles
