Sorry Izbeck but midwives and an epidural were not part of nature’s plans. Other creatures manage without and so do/did humans before the healthcare system was implemented. Granted it may have made the process of giving birth easier, it isn’t really essential. As a species we may be constantly advancing in medical science but at the same time we are becoming more dependent on it; ultimately leading to increased vulnerability if it fails us.

I dont know what your idea of ‘essential’ is, but preventing women from dying during childbirth and ensuring those children survive is pretty high on my priority list.
Its all very well to say ‘we managed before’ but we cant go back to the state our bodies were before we evolved to rely on what we have. Sanitation for a start to prevent infections.

Also it might be worth chiming in about contraception. Quite important for keeping the population steady.

Hmm, this does raise an interesting question; do parents perceive modern society to be more necessary than those who have not had children?

Even more can be said regarding IVF. OK It’s sad that some people who would dearly love kids find it almost impossible to conceive but that is natures attempt to help control the population, as is disease and natural disasters.

There are plenty of unloved kids out there just waiting to be eaten, er, I mean adopted!!!

Contraception would be less necessary if less mothers and children survived childbirth. It’s another natural part of population control.

Well this is kind of what Chrispy was getting at I think, or at least one of his points. Nature and evolution provide us with all we need. If you don’t make it, sounds harsh, but nature never intended for so many of us to be successfully born into this world. We should have a much higher infancy mortality rate. But humans persist in overcoming the natural world’s obstacles. Hence here we are; massively over populated and too few resources for the current rate of population growth. We will likely be our own demise forging such a forceful path ‘forwards’.

See, now I’m back and we have interesting conversations again! 😉

We are so naive and arrogant that we firmly believe that playing God is the right way to go!

I agree completely with what Chrispy says. As radical as it seems we pretty much need to start culling ourselves if we stand any chance of being here for much longer, that or hurry up with moving all the rich people to Mars, that way we can be left to get back to our roots. We’ve hugely fallen out of touch as a general population with our true place and connection with our planet.

Clinging on to life while not taking into account quality of life. Making euthanasia illegal, increasing our life expectancy exponentially is a massive problem.

Euthanasia is another very interesting topic, could have a thread of it’s own; ironically on the life forum lol. When it’s a matter of physical health the sufferer should have the end say in when they die, not a team of doctors desperately trying to preserve a life that isn’t worth living. When an individual’s mental health enters the equation that is when it becomes a very tricky matter.

Agreed, it has to be by the patients lucid consent. However, parents and relatives of vegetables should also be allowed to make a choice.

I have made this promise to many people and very few believe me:

If a being were to hand me a red button, which if pressed would automatically and quite randomly kill 2/3 of every Human on the planet I would be scrabbling to push it!

Why are the best buttons always red?! Lol.

I too would push that button.

    It HAS to be red!

Either you are a sociopath, you see the bigger picture or like me, you are a sociopath who sees the bigger picture! lol

Lol, well I think it’s already established I’m a little more, let’s say volatile, than most.
