  • Hi everyone, new member.
I’m Greg, a student living in Brighton, third year of psychology and Uni of Sussex.
I’m running a project for my third year dissertation exploring if the different party lifestyles have long term effects on emotional facial expression recognition and I need participants!

It’s really easy, just a pen and paper decision task and questionnaires on lifestyle and background info. In all it takes between twenty minutes to half an hour.
All data collected is kept confidential and in a way so that it is completely anonymous and so you will not be able to be identified to your data.

I’d really like it if some of you who are local could help me out as I’m having trouble accessing the right social groups.

For the study I’ll be giving doughnuts out to the participants and each will be entered into a £25 draw (best theyd give us). I’m also doing a thing where referring your friends increases your chances of winning the prize as a way to access more people of similar lifestyles.
I can meet people in town, campus or in Brighton as long as I can get there. I live near London road.

Another incentive is that you get to be part of a piece of research that, if it goes well, is likely to be published. I chose to study this area having been interested in the work of David Nutt and the drugs live show and though it’s harder to find participants, feel it’s important to find out the truth about lifestyles before outlawing them.

I hope I can meet up with a few of you in the next few weeks, if you have any questions please email me at gs227@sussex.ac.uk and I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

    cheers!

    Greg

Why don’t you just head over to the East bank residence on campus?. Plenty of peeps over there do drugs. LOL or head over Stamner park a lunch time and play sniff out the spliff. Sussex and brighton Uni’s are full of drugs. LOL

I will take part in your thingy majig, there is a few of us from brighton on here i’m sure will help out. I will try and round you up some peeps Ok

Oh and i’d like to remain anon if that’s ok, my mum works at the Uni registry and seems to know everything that happens there, like when my frend got arrested for selling drugs. Meeep

DOUGHNUTS!!! DAM I WISH I LIVED IN BRIGHTON!!

    I know right. Yummerz

Have put up posters on campus but am doing everything I can do get as large and representative sample as I can.
Thatd be really good, everyone who takes part is anonymous. Your name will only ever appear on a concent form which will always be kept seperately from data, with no way of matching your answers with that so no worries there.
    Hope to see you soon!

I’ll participate too man, just let us know when.

Ok this sound like fun. We get to help a scholar AND get free doughnuts. Roll charlie sheen

    Awesome, thanks!
I’m going to ministry tonight so won’t get much done this weekend but I’ll contact all that reply saying theyre up for it from this thread, as well as anyone who emails me etc, next week and arrange a time that works.

In the mean time can those who want to participate ask around their friends to see if any of them would be willing as well? The more the better and I can meet groups which will be easier and quicker.

    See you soon

this is certainly more interesting than the average “rave related” research – though much of the drug related research in the past is good I’m sure its been used to advance prohibition / restriction as much as tolerance but I really can’t see how this one could be used negatively as its too niche and random!

I think it’s important to understand that scientific research, when conducted correctly and with as little bias as possible gives policy makers the truth of whether there are dangers, long term effects, etc, on which to make decisions by. Unfortunately, drug research has been rife with methodological incompetence and bias.

Even when done right the media often do more damage than good by reporting over simplifications without reading the actual material. Results of increased chance will be reported as full blown cause and effect to sell more papers.

If you read into modern research authors are often aware of the failings of the past, and I think that any research carefully done is useful. Whether or not it will be used to argue for or against prohibition is up to policy makers and politicians who have preferred to simply ignore the facts (and seen with the case of David Nutt), not even bothering to get informed on the issues but sticking with gut feelings and 2 dimensional ‘anti drug’ attitudes.

I’ve chosen this area to get the truth about certain lifestyles. Once the facts are clear the other debates can follow but the research is a tool, not a campaign for or against those lifestyles.

I won’t get into my personal opinion about specific drugs and legislation as I have to take a fairly professional approach to this study, but I think it’s clear to most academics and people within the communities that the current system is neither up to date with current research, nor working to reduce use or increase safety of users. The more quality research is done, the better chance there is of creating a system based on fact instead of hunches and gut feeling.

Hope this helps you all to understand the rationale behind the research and show how taking part in the research will benefit everyone, building pressure against political ignorance.

What do you fancy? Scotch egg? Cheese string? I reckon I could stretch to a packet of crisps?

Are you doing any sort of online questionaire on this?
a lot of us here don’t live anywhere Brighton, I’m in Edinburgh for example, would love to be able to take part though.

I went for a pen and paper choice for better validity however I can upload the documents and you could either print them and fill them out and then send them to me or if you can’t print them, complete them on your computers and email them to me.

I’ll look over the documents and upload them with instructions.
I would prefer printed documents as there are benefits of having physical copies of consent forms (they can be kept away from the data, they can show that the person signed them in person, etc.) but if this is not possible for some I would be fine with emailed data.
