  • Hi All,

How would you re-partition your drive without losing data?

I have 2 hard drives and the idiot before me partitioned the drive with about 4 GB spare. So my C/D drive (c being the main) has no GOD DAMN ROOM. Grrrrrr.

That’s all taken up now and I need to find out how to re-partition the drive so I don’t lose the data (since windows own version would wipe my slate clean)

I’ve heard that Linux can do this or a Linux start up disc ( not putting the O/S on just running it from the disc)

Any suggestions, links, software, direct downloads and easy instructions and I would be very greatful. In fact, so greatful a PM to you if it works and there’s a special prize for the one who solves my problem

TBH depending how soon you needed it I’d just buy or borrow another hard drive (they are cheap nowadays), remove your current drive (to avoid mistakes) reformat Windows on the new one then mount your original hard drive as a slave to the new one…

you can then transfer the data at your leisure

yes its possible to mount it under Linux and do clever things but there is always the risk of trashing the whole fucking lot it it goes pear shaped…

the way I’d suggest doing it would be to have all your data backed up first by whatever means..on a separate volume.. (I’m assuming you mean two partitions on a single drive, if you have two physically seperate drives then just copy the data over to the one with less data)

You lot are way too smart!! Computers confuse the fuck out of me!

    Hmm,

Thats not a bad idea GL,

    Another Disc,

Re-install windows on the new one and transfer the data to the new drive

Yes the c drive has been partitioned into 2 sections. c and d – there is also a 2nd hard drive which is my e drive which has plenty of room. I think the guy before me got the two drives mixed up and put windows and everything on it on the small drive and partitioned it with disregards to updates (like SP3) and other programmes.

I’m a person who would rather log in onto one account and use that one account as there is only me who uses it and I live alone so I dont want to create any additional profiles either. Just nice and simple. And the programmes I defineately DONT want to lose because the software along would cost hundreds.

Can I ask something else? If I kept the OEM keys for my programmes and lets assume i had a virus which destroyed my computer…If I re-downloaded say Office 2007 / Outlook 2007 etc (which is what I have) and used my current OEM would that work or would “COMPUTER SAYS NO”?

Hmm, I’ll have to think about that one GL, TBH.
