BEDLAM sound system & ASSOCIATED FAMILY ?

Bedlam Sound System was founded in Dalston, East London in 1992. The Sound System has been involved in the organization of the first House Party in 1990 across squats Harlesden, North London. It was a free tekno Sound System and an early adopted the lifestyle traveler mainly because of the Criminal Act that forced him into exile in Europe as well as their friends Spiral Tribe. Travelling techno motor movement in Europe and led by Steve Bedlam and four others helped themselves by numerous other small hands, the first Rave were organized in the early 90s and later was present at Bedlam Teknival of Castlemorton in 1992 .

Steeve Bedlam – 1994

After many evenings with Spiral Tribe eg Black Mountains or the Smeatharpe Free Festival in England, the Sound System becomes known in the years 1990-2000 on the Free Party scene throughout the UK and Europe.

In 2000, Steve Bedlam and Bashment_Bish (Member of Negusa Negast sound Reggea Roots Brixton) System despatched all their container shipping in Australia for the tour “OZ 2000” in the desert of the same name for a big party in association with Mutoid Waste for the famous 2000 EARTHDREAM reported in a video and a CD.
Bedlam Sound System is also known for the “Free NRG” organized Biron Bay (video below), whose principle was to create a “Free Beach” or “free range” “for the New Year in a spirit of unity.

Part of her also organized parties in East Timor later when Steeve Bedlam, he now runs a business audio system installed in London …

AFAIK the Spirals lead organiser was accused of some really quite naughty things to do with mind control and distribution of heroin… but as I never came across them anyway, not my business, could be hearsay, could be true.

I certainly did run into Bedlam and they seemed much less up their own arse than the Spirals. Some of the Mutoids were definitely well into their smack, but hey, so far as I know they’re dead meat now anyway. Ones I met anyway, but “Mutoid” covers a wide variety of nut.

I may be totally wrong but apparently he can’t even move house. My brother thinks once your methadone is registered to a particular pharmacy that is the only place it can be collected without reassessment or some shit. I’m dubious that they would restrict you that much though. Breach of human rights surely.

to some extent they were the pre-Internet equivalent of Anonymous – anyone who associated with them was viewed as part of Spiral Tribe and they claimed to be “anarchic” but there were of course hierarchies due to who had the resources and connections.

When me and my friends (as young teenagers) went to an event part organised by a local crew and the Spirals in about 1991, we ended up on a Thames Valley Police local intelligence file as the local officers genuinely thought we were the “junior wing of Spiral Tribe” encouraging teenagers to hold house parties in their family houses when their parents were away, and take drugs there.

Of course this was hardly abnormal behaviour for teenagers even over 20 years ago – but in hindsight I can now understand why the feds got in such a pickle over it as the scale of drug use in that part of the region (an affluent suburb of Reading) shot through the roof, filled the local surgery with casualties (not life threatening but the usual depression and greater tendency to physical health problems that excessive party drugs use causes) and affected nearly every family in the area in some way or another. A large proportion of my friends did indeed get into heroin and also associated criminality and long term lifestyle problems and I guess some are still in that bad situation today even in their 30s and 40s.

But that wasn’t any deliberate conspiracy by anyone ether party folk or even the authorities overreacting or not reacting enough, its just that no one knew enough about the pros and cons of drug use back then. Hopefully today people are better educated.
