Tuong Van Nguyen, a 25-year old Australian, will soon be put to death by hanging for smuggling 396.2 grams of heroin out of Singapore.
His mother made a heartfelt plea for his life, but Singapore President S.R. Nathan has refused to grant him clemency.
Despite ongoing legal maneuvers, it looks like it may be too late.
The totalitarian element of America’s drug war extremists must be giddy. After all, their drug war can’t be fought without casualties or collateral damage.
The legacy of Mao Zedong lives on. His government’s policy of mass incarceration and execution of drug offenders probably provides the sordid inspiration for Singapore’s policy. Personally, I think the only tangible value of Mao today is as an icon used in kitschy art.
