[The D’Alliance] Denver Post Editorial–Good Or Bad?
Today the Denver Post editorial page came out against a local marijuana legalization ballot initiative. Bad. But they also say that states and the federal government should “legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana use.” Good.
The Post gives two reasons for their opposition. First, they say the initiative is only symbolic and will have no effect on state and federal law. True, but it’s not an uncommon practice for localities to pass their own largely symbolic laws to make a political statement. See here and here. Second, they are wary of the campaign tactics of the initiatives backers. Yes, some of the advertisements supporting passage edged on hyperbole. But is this a convenient cop-out, letting the Post avoid alienating some of their readers by sticking to a middle ground that is not there? If they had stood by their principled stance on ending marijuana prohibition, they would have urged passage of the initiative.
