  • I was just watching the news where they were calling the virginia tech gunman 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui a monster. And I can’t help thinking he was a victim too despite having commited an obviously horrific act he was clearly very ill and had been refered for psychiatric treatment…

    Any thoughts?

I still dont think enough information has come out about the whole incident yet, i cant see someone just shooting up a school for the sake of it. There must be something deep down that has triggered this.

I was reading on the BBC new site and they were saying that he fits the profiles of previous people who have committed a similar crime. There are also bits of a tape he sent an american news agency and you can see something has triggered him.

From what he says it sounds to me like he has had some bullying dished out to him. But from what the papers/news say they have had enough warning s this lad has some issues he needed to deal with, well needed help with. If teachers/doctors saw he has not so stable they should have helped him.

I think the lad has been let down and this has caused a switch to flick in his head.

I don’t know a lot about this guy’s background, but I always feel terrible for the parents in this situation, they have to deal both with grieving for their lost son, and also the extreme publisiation of the terrible crimes their son did, that would be too much for me to handle.

Have you seen the vid yet? Its pretty grim stuff, i’m surprised they showed it.

The families of the bereaved probably didn’t need that, not so soon anyway.

He must have been a sad and depressed young man..Something must have been wrong in his head..I feel sad for him too

Don’t know if there ever will be found an explanation about why he did it..
      We can’t read his mind..

I think it’s terrible something like this can happen at all..
Read in another thread about the weapon law in the states..I don’t think that would have changed anything..If you want a gun you can always find one who will sell it to you..

      Can people be born evil..?
I’m not sure , but some kids do terrible things from they are very small, must be something wrong..

Could the people around him have done something..Don’t think so,and I don’t think it’s a question that should be asked, because they must all feel terrible them self , and have probably asked them self that question so many times since it happened..
Asking that question (for me) is the same as trying to find somebody to blame, and we shouldn’t do that..

I hope something like that never happens again, but I think it will..Could have been in Denmark..We have had a few cases like this, but never like this where so many young people were killed..
But one kid dead is one to many..

The cases from Denmark was about jealousy.. And it was all young men committing the crime..(to my knowledge)

Fell so sad for anyone involved..And for the rest of us too

      😥

I don’t think it should have been shown at all for the good of the entire USA.

Unlike any other film made by a criminal there is no public interest in doing so, as the offender is dead already, not on the run. The FBI should have immediately seized it, and the only people allowed to see it should be mental health professionals in the context of their work.

Showing it on TV actually glorifies what he has done and could even mean that the next angry young man who shoots up a college is going to try and top the body count of 32 :hopeless:

Agreed.. I haven’t seen it myself and I really don’t want to :hopeless:

They send it in Danish television yesterday, but I changed the channel..

        Scary thought :hopeless:

        But I’m sure it’s true.. 🙁

Read that he might have been looking for his former girlfriend..the same scenario as in Denmark..

I think a big problem is the extremely divided and competitive nature of American society. People are divided amongst racial lines, amongst peer group/subculture lines and there is still little positive interaction.

The big problem is that resources are plentiful and lots of public sector things are “left to the market”, so people are not forced together as much under the watchful eye of the state (which eventually causes some sort of integration, even if its not an ideal solution) as in smaller European countries.

And apologies to the decent American posters on here, but some of your peers give an impression that there is very little empathy for others in the USA.

How many Americans willingly contributed to a recent thread on how to adulterate drugs to increase profit before sale, without a shred of repentance at the fact they were ripping off people?

In many cases it was their first post on this otherwise friendly forum.

its hardly surprising in an aggressive social climate like this, that people who may already be mentally ill are pushed over the edge.

exactly. we had a big talk about it today in our history class, with a real independent left-wing teacher monitoring our discussion (he’d have probably got into a lot of shit for letting us do this, shame really cos it’s really useful and interesting) and we discussed all possible factors.

the way america is divided between income, racial status and political background is nothing short of 1700’s britain. and that’s undoubtedly gonna aggravate and motivate people who really feel that they are inadequate in today’s american society, and extreme measures are committed by those who really have no hope for a truly happy life within society…

You cant just blame it on levels of gun ownership – the Canadians have as many guns per head of population and dont have this level of problems….

Seems to me it may in some way be down to how the goverment and media of the country control the people [by maintaining a climate of fear is what I mean specifically]. If you are scared [and encouraged to be scared ] of everything then you will react with more energy than someone who is not. It is hard to think clearly when you live in fear and trust no-one…..

Publishing the vids was likely a rating decision with no consideration of the victims family :hopeless: and watch out for the N.ational R.ifle A.ssociation’s imminent rally in Virginia folks :obey: just in case anyone dares express the anti firearms opinion in response to this latest killing spree:hopeless:

I think it is a terrible waste of all the lives lost in this incident and I offer them all my condolences on their losses. :flowers:

hes obviously looking for attention, and hes got it!, we should not of shown these videos not cos they maybe horrifying(look at all the iraqis and americans dieing in iraq being broadcasted)but because he made it as a suicide note for ppl to be drawn into and start to agree with him. I think we live in a world of violence, sex, and drugs FACT. but we should not live in a world of PROPAGANDA(but we do sometimes)
