  • Is it really that bad? I’ve not been inside an educational institution for near 20 years now, but from the outside it just looks like any other such uni/college..

I would say though that the campus is a big maze and not particularly welcoming to visitors, some young artists linked to an environment group I am part of were having an exhibition and I nearly considered attending but I couldn’t find any info on the website about where they were supposed to be..

how much is people having overoptimistic expectations of campus life? it seems these days uni is more like a big extension of high school and they also actuallly work students harder and nanny them a lot more…

perhaps also the dissatisfaction is amongst those who go up there for liberal arts degree and it dawns on them by year 2 there are fuck all real paying jobs once you’ve graduated. At least if they are studying a vocational course for the construction industry they could help build the place, half of it seems to be a building site :laugh_at:

University Campus Suffolk (UCS) has ranked in the bottom ten universities in the National Student Survey.
The number of satisfied students has dropped from 80 per cent last year to just 71 per cent in this year’s survey, ranking UCS ninth from the bottom of the league table.
But bosses at UCS have today said there are major changes afoot that will have a “huge impact” on students’ experiences over the next year.
The survey, published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) asked all full and part-time students about every aspect of their university experience, including teaching, assessment, support and resources.
Professor Mike Saks, provost at UCS since May, said in areas, including teaching and assessment, the university has “outstripped” the average.

university satisfaction is generally down from what I have heard, not sure if thats just students realising they are paying a lot of money and demanding a better service or if the quality is going down. Bit of both I fear.

    its wank

imo uni is a big fat waste for the price of it!

Don’t forget that UCS incorporates Bury St Edmunds, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft College as well as the main Ipswich campus.

true – have to admit I wasn’t 100% sure about the links between the other colleges as I think parts of them are also FE colleges as well as higher education insitutions (the Ipswich campus itself seems to share facilities with Suffolk New College).

I suspect that as far as getting “some sort of edumacation” it isn’t that bad an place but doesn’t seem to have the social life associated with uni/college, particularly not one what crosses over into the wider community.

When I lived in Reading it was not uncommon for dance music events to be held at the student union premises, or students themselves would attend local ones. For me it was like each year having all the fun of the social life without the hassle of exams – indeed I kept up this “perpetual student” lifestyle well into my 30s :laugh_at:

anyone here at uni? do students have much of an independent social life these days or is it all carefully managed for them?

If you’re not gonna get a job out of it it does seem pointless these days. worse, studying something that you enjoy is of course fun but it must be a real psychological blow when 4 years later the students have a fuckload of debt and have to work in a call centre… might be why there are so many big time ket users in their early 20s with liberal arts degrees…

what pisses me off his how the uni’s build up young peoples hopes these days, yet they don’t even value them (such as not showing where the art exhibition was so the rest of the community could look at it…)

I’m finding uni to be a blast, massive social life and a good course (doing Aerospace Engineering), new union this year (3x O2 acadamies no less, 1250, 500 & 250 capacities venues) and great societies. I admit that sometimes the level of competence from some lecturers is severely wanting. A lot of them are fantastic at their specialty but useless at communication and actually teaching on a one to one basis if you see them during a surgery hour.
