  • There have been four RTCs between London buses and pedestrians or cyclists in just 48 hours, with fatalities and serious injuries

yet when I lived in London, most recently in the early 1990s, collisions involving buses were extremely rare, despite the capital being a dense and busy place…

Is a combination of bad road layout/overcrowding, the sheer pace of life and/or people (including bus drivers who are normally very safe drivers) just not caring about anyone else any more?

I had a 4-5 hour bus ride from Stansted to Birmingham..

Felt I was sitting on a death trap..

The driver of the bus acted like he owned the road and the other cars, motorbikes etc.. Was on the road just to piss him off..:you_crazy

Was not a very nice experience.

But I think a lot of it have to do with they are pressured by the bus companies to be at a certain place on a certain time and it don’t leave much space to think about others and drive carefully

(It’s the same in Denmark) :crazy_diz

I thought some politicians promised cycling lanes everywhere or something, l don’t see much of that!

It’s well scary being overtaken by a chemical tanker when you’re on a bike.

cycle lanes, although a potential solution, aren’t always the best for these reasons…

      • many are badly designed,
      • the ones on pavements/alleys cause you to risk crashing into pedestrians
      • they “ghettoise” cyclists as drivers then feel they don’t have a right to be on the road
      • they also allow youths to intimidate or even rob cyclists who aren’t streetwise about what areas they are going through – many cycle lanes lead through rough estates, and gates needed to keep minimotos out creating a “pinch point” where scum can lurk.

if they are built they need to be sufficiently wide and free from obstructions such as street furniture in the path (signposts, utility poles, telecoms cabinets etc).

Solutions that work in England (being a small country) are managing traffic so some roads have less traffic and are then safe to cycle on. This works to an extent in Ipswich, particularly just out of town where a long stretch of road (Old Norwich Road) is only permitted for use by cyclists, local traffic and the odd delivery vehicle and farm vehicle, whilst the rest of the traffic is diverted to the main A12.

If however the road is well designed, being overtaken by a large vehicle isn’t so frightening when both of you have plenty of room…

As for Denmark, I suspect Danish bus drivers are as aggressive as ours, but the difference is that roads are better laied out.

We have people killed every week, either by buses or lorries ..

A lot of the accidents happens in cross roads and lot of them is because of a right way turn.. ( bad explained :hopeless: )

The drivers can’t see the cyclist or pedestrian because not all buses and lorries are equipped with mirrors and cameras even though the law say they shall..

        BUT..

cyclists and pedestrians should be more care full in the traffic..We have so many accidents and people still don’t think..

Can’t blame it all on the bus/lorry-drivers..

I did check a recent news article about EU traffic safety – this showed that UK and DK have the same level of casualties, but Denmark is apparently actually better at reducing the number..

I know the problem you mean, it happens here when a large vehicle turns across a junction due to the reasons you mention about mirrors/cameras…

this is true – luckily for me in the days I helped out a lot more with raves, I was a passenger in many large vehicles and vans (used to transport sound equipment).

Often you would have to help vehicles reverse in and out of places by looking in the passenger side mirror (or getting out and directign the vehicle) – so I learned how little visibility the driver of a large vehicle actually has in some fields of view – I always give larger vehicles sufficient room and stay on the side where I will be visible to the driver..

I think a lot is due to the pace of life though, everyone is in such a rush and doesn’t look out for one another or even themselves..
