Whilst German shepherds are common police breeds across the UK and labradors/spaniels are used to sniff out drugs and cash, I am curious about why the Scots forces are using sheepdog breeds such as collie crosses?
are they to sniff out people who are lost in the highlands or hiding out there after doing crime?
Pets lead the way as police dogs
A Scottish police force has had to ask the public to call off the dogs after a successful appeal for canine recruits. Grampian Police has been offered more than 100 dogs after the appeal for more four-legged help.
They now have several dogs which are undertaking a month-long trial to see if they make the grade.
Grateful Sergeant Jim Wood of the dog section said: “The response has been absolutely fantastic, but we now need to ask for no more dogs.”
The appeal was only made in Aberdeen in February and police have been overwhelmed with the response.
Sgt Wood said: “We were bowled over with the quality of dogs of all shapes and sizes that have been offered from places as far away as the Borders, the Western Isles and even England.
“As a result of the appeal we now have an extra three specialist dogs, which are terrier, labrador collie cross and labrador breeds, and a general purpose German shepherd, all on a month trial.
“We now need to thank the members of the public for their interest and ask for no more dogs please.”
