  • Important and wonderful news this, as close friends of mine are just abt to open the first dedicated biodiesel garage in the country, in Manchester!

Basically, the garage will offer two types of fuel. The first B5, is 5% biodiesel mixed with 95% diesel. This will be available to anyone, and can be used in any diesel engine without modification, as the fuel meets the same specification as diesel, and does not have any implications for warranties etc.

The second fuel will be 100% biodiesel, made to the highest european standards. To get this fuel from the pump, you will need to become a member of the Coop. This is a simple process, costing £10, and allows Mcr Biodiesel Coop to ensure you have received the right advice before using the pure biodiesel. They will recommend the best blend to run on, and by having both B5 and B100 pumps, and mixing the two, any blend can be provided – for the first time in the UK!! NO CONVERSION IS REQUIRED TO RUN ON ANY BLEND OF BIODIESEL!! WORKS WITH ANY DIESEL ENGINE!

Manchester Biodiesel Coop is a not for profit company, working desperately hard to bring you this instant alternative to fossil fueled motoring. Using biodiesel can reduce full lifecycle carbon doixide emmissions, compared with normal diesel, by 50-80%, and local air quality is improved too. It is a biodegradeable and non toxic fuel, reduces wear on your engine, and brings a wonderful smell of chips to your driving experience. All taxes have been paid, and it is fully legal. Prices will be very competitive with normal garages, with the pure biodiesel cheaper than the B5.

The garage will be called Green Gold Biodiesel, and will open near the centre of Mcr just before Christmas.

IF YOU LIVE IN THE NORTHWEST, YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, COLLEAGUES AND ANYONE WITH A DIESEL VEHICLE!! THESE GUYS NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

WILL POST MORE CONTACT DETAILS WHEN AVAILABLE, BUT ALL INTERESTED FOLK ARE ASKED TO EMAIL NOW TO: manchesterbiodiesel@yahoo.co.uk

    nice one green garage

there’s a garage in bristol that will convert your car to run on vegetable oil

    why isn’t this widespread, fugsake?

    now up and running

    join their veg oil revolution

    excellent stuff!

there should be more of these places (why are there not more down south?)

the hold up was waiting for HM Revenue and Customs and Defra to come to a decision on permissible processes and blends.

it wasn’t just whitehall stalling though, there was a big problem with the “max power” types just wanting to evade taxation and using veg oil in unconverted/untuned vehicles which created more pollution – and worse still some haulage companies were “brewing their own” cheap “biodiesel” to reduce costs.

This lead to a horrendous incident where London Fire Brigade ended up helping close down an illegal and highly dangerous “fuel factory” in a residential area! – they had already created a slick of oil on the pavement and road (a safety hazard in itself) which led to the cops becoming suspicious.

LFB recovered several full 200 litre drums of dubious flammable liquid; it was a good thing this place was shut; it could have been a small-scale Buncefield in a highly populated area…..

so the authorities have tightened up on the acceptable processes (unfortunately the veg oil and wood turpentine recipe is no longer acceptable for road fuel) and introduced a “light touch” regulatory and monitoring scheme.

This is how the “club” works; by introducing it the garage has explained how to use the fuel correctly without causing extra pollution and how to modify an engine if required; and would also sort out the form which goes to HM R&C to show you are using this fuel (I think drivers get a certificate which can be produced to cops and other authorities should they be concerned over the fuel in use…)

This is all good news for the environmentally aware driver, but be careful…

Some of the major world petrol companies (mainly american) are cashing in on the surge of eco-friendly consumers.

Much biodiesel is being made from soy plantations in the Brazilian Amazon – land clearance for plantations have become the major reason for deforestation in the rainforest.

I am not casting doubt on the origins of your friend’s Boidiesel, Stumbling Matt, in fact I applaud the efforts wholeheartedly. I just want people who do not know where the ‘green’ fuel that they are buying comes from to investigate it before they buy it.

Biodiesel is a great thing, but only from the right source.

Good luck to your friend, Stumbling Matt.

indeed so; there is also a big problem with the Sumatran rainforest (the bit between Indonesia and Malaysia) being destroyed and replanted with palm trees to produce palm oil for biodiesel.

That said if the garages in Manchester and elsewhere are making use of waste oil from the fast food industry of Great Britain or oil-bearing seeds which can be grown here there shouldn’t be a problem ( a suggestion to green gold – perhaps you should explain this on your site?)

like it or not the only way biodiesel will work is also with demand reduction – i.e more sustainable use of motor vehicles and a reduction in non-essential travel…
