  • hey guyz, basically i’ve run out of funds to pay my contract phone. There’s no way i can afford the bloody thing which works out at at least two times the supposed monthly bill so i’ve put a stop on the direct debits to stop the hefty bank charges. They’ve now cut of the contract for obvious reasons. I’m jst going to fuck them off so to speak but I was wondering is it possible to have the handset unlocked so i can waz a p.a.y.t. sim into it?

Also, when i embarked on this foolish mission, i had my telephone number of 3 years (p.a.y.t) transfered onto the contract. I wouldn’t mind keeping hold of that badboy as well. DO they have to provide me with the code so i can have the number transfered back to a p.a.y.t sim?

basically is that number my legal possesion?

my handset in a sony walkman w580i btw

    thanks

your credit rating will be fucked for years

Im having problems with my network atm as well, im with 3, their shit, cant afford the monthly payments and to downgrade i have to pay 25 quid each time! havent paid last months bill so they got me off till i pay it, bastards!!

    3 are shit full stop

don’t sign up for what you can’t afford, it will fuck you financially for years

i don’t know how i passed the credit check in the first place

Shit, you’ve only had that mobile for a few months

AFAIK your telephone number actually belongs to Ofcom and is leased from the Government by the telephone companies (this applies to fixed lines as well.) Telephone companies initially buy blocks of numbers and there is thus a market value for them.

They have only recently allowed people to “port” numbers as there are admin costs involved, which the mobile firms usually swallow in order to get a new customer.

On contract they also subsidise the cost of your mobile phone which they hope to make back over the terms of the contract.

You haven’t provided the mobile firm with any real profit, so unless you grovel they are unlikely to do jack shit for you such as letting you have your number back and like globalloon said they will mark your credit reference (to warn other phone companies!)

I’m not sure what happens with the phones, whether you are expected to return the phone as part of the debt (it depends on the contract). if its in the contract they could easily add the price of it on to your debt.

I’m not sure if you can unlock phones as easily as before, I think its a lot harder to change the IMEI (unique ID number) these days which also means the mobile company could block the phone as well if they wanted as technically its “stolen” or at least the value of it that they haven’t recovered from your payments..

That said there is still a lot of competition in the market so might be worth speaking to the mobile company (assuming you havent’ already been abusive to their staff as they will have that on your record as well). Maybe you may be able to convice them to convert you to PAYT to try and at least recover some of the cost they have shelled out by supplying you the phone upfront..

It will just be locked to the network and can usually be unlocked at any second hand phone shop. They only bar the IMEI number when the phone is reported stolen.

Although as you say he may end up with a bill for the cost of the phone coming through his door as they are free on the condition that you take a 12month contract usually.

ive been fucked over by vodaphone a few times, but only because i didnt talk to them, when i finally spoke to them they were pretty understanding and gave me more time to pay my outstanding bill and offered to let me pay it in installments.

the worst thing was the bank charges, specially as lloydstsb aint letting me claim them back till they decide whether or not its justified in court, which could take months or even years.

i think you can have it unlocked, my sister unlocked her phone for her mate when she upgraded.

Slightly OT but there’s a couple of good free unlock code calculaters for DCT3 and DCT4 (most older Nokias), one reason I’ve stuck with Nokia is being able to unlock them without a lead  Ironically the newer cheaper Nokias from Tescos etc are harder to unlock.

carphone warehouse once unlocked a phone i was getting from their shop. I said i wasnt sure i wanted that phone cos wasnt on the network i wanted so the guy who worked there was like, ok i’ll unlock it to other networks!!

av seen plenty of shops round town that can unlock mobiles.. usually for a fiver

I havn’t got the money to get it unlocked at the moment if its possible. They are still charging me for the contract eventhough its been suspened which is not right imo but I signed the bloody thing so…
In a strange way I’m kinda enjoying not having a phone. There isn’t the constant string of calls tempting me to go out and get mashed when I’ve got more productive things to do. It wasn’t to great when I heard that I was going to be a farther and I didn’t have the girl’s number to get hold of her  Thats all sorted now though thanx to facebook.
From reading people’s repplies it’s wise to get in contact with them rather than just ignoring the bills. I recieved 1 the other day (which was for a month which the contract was locked) and it came close to £50. It should only be 20 per calander month plus a fiver insurance. With vat that only works out at no more than 35. what are they playing at?
Anybody that is with Orange will testify how crap their customer service is. They take about 20 mins to answer a call (which they charge you for) and then they do not even recognise your mobile number which the automated service asks for. When you finally get through they are generally as useful as a condom in the vatican…
    rant over.
    thanks guys

But have you made calls that were not included free in your contract?? this is usually why your bill will be higher than you first thought.

I have used Orange before and found their customer service to be quite good, i only stopped using them as i didn’t get good signal at home or at work. My ex is with them and she had problems paying the bill, called them up and they were fine and sorted it all out over the phone with out any issues.

Personally i would not go near a contract phone again as i like to know how much i have spent and i know if i cant afford to have credit on pay as you go i dont have any. I dont run the risk of bad credit….

was on an orange contract yrs ago and i got skanked out of a student package that was really good but some random phone company rang me up and said they were from orange and asked if i wanted to keep the contract. So i said was thinkin about it, then they switched me into their contract and i couldnt get out of it. Went on lowest possible tariff and had to wait til end of contract to end it.:hopeless:

Got Virgin now which is much better and doesnt cost me much a mnth

It wasn’t the 1st bill I’ve had for around 50 nicker, I presumed this was because I had phoned up a few helplines etc because I hadn’t gone over my 3bees
The bill I was referring to in the above post was for a month in which I hadn’t made any phone calls whatsoever as they had suspended my contract.

As for the credit rating….I’m already screwed. Think I’ll get round that one by by getting a job with a monstrous salary when I leave uni :laugh_at:
