  • Looking for something to travel around in for a few months with 3 other friends. Has anyone done it with this amount of people before? We would like to do it as cheap as possible and also dont want anything to big, but big enough for the four of us. We’d be willing to convert something.

I know absolutely nothing about motor vehicles so any help would be appreciated.

TG and process have vans, whats ur budget?

this http://www.partyvibe.com/forums/classifieds/42096-van-sale.html is for sale, can sleep four, but its two double beds and you would be very cosy as one of the beds is above the boot space, could easily lower it tho…

That looks absolutely perfect for what we want. I will have to speak to the guys as we’re not planning on going until next summer, and we are all very very skint atm. Most of the guys are in portugal atm and are back after bank holiday, so i will let you know the verdict when they are back.

After having a little snooze in process’s van at uktek i can assure you its quite comfy!

    sound let me know. 🙂

Also would we need a special licence to drive it due to the size or does it fit into a standard driving licence?

nah its a 3.5t so fine to drive on a normal car license

You might want to check this THOUGHROUGHLY ( ie your own resarch) you wouldnt want to offer the excuse to the old bill ” s’ok some one one a website I was fine to drive it!” when they pull you over, would you?

If you passed your test before 1/1/1997 you can drive it, after that date a B cat on your license entitles you to drive UP TO 3.5t (not including it.)
You may well find that you need to get a C1 cat on you license (involes a seperate test) this will entitle you to drive UP TO 7.5t

Na it can’t weigh more then 3.5 ton’s on a B licence (this encludes 3.5 ton but not 3.51 ton as i understand it but go to 3.49 ton just to make sure – cut off a bit of the seat or something ))

We have shit loads of 7.5 ton lorrys at work .. and alltho C1 is “UPTO 7.5 TON” all the drivers legaly need is a c1 on there licence.

The vehicles you can drive or ride and minimum ages : Directgov – Motoring

If you actualy ring the DVLA up they’ll say it can’t “exceed” 3.5 ton so slightly mis-informing you when they say upto 3.5 ton tbf

You are forgetting the MAM! Man!

they call a vehical a 3.5 tonner if it’s mam is 3.5 ton i belive (when i say can’t weight more then 3.5 i mean it’s classed as a 3.5 ton lorry or a lorry with a mam of 3.5 ton … bit mis leading what i said too … should work for the DVLA :P)

    So to sum up

Phone the fucking DVLA! Good luck getting through though :o)

    :laugh_at:

I found this site really helpful and tons of advice:

SBMCC Self Build Motor Caravanners Club

and there are tons of experienced drivers and a wealth of people who know more about vans etc than me on tribal living, and when I was looking to buy I posted and got really helpful feedback:

    Tribal Living

esp if looking to drive abroad,

best advise I can give is make sure you get a high top of something similar that you can all stand up in, from my experience and talking to others this is mega important if in the van for any lenght of time,
might be worth taking a tent so you can have some extra space- as 4 in the van for any lenght of time can put pressure on the best of friendships! (esp if a farter or snorer on board :laugh_at:)

and some people recommend joining the caravan club as they have tons of advice and reduced prices on sites (if you may stay at some) and I think reduced insurance etc,

and check out insurance before buying – esp if any have driving convictions or points – as they refused to insure my other half so I’ve been designated driver all summer and it has been tough on a few occasions driving 8- 9 + hours after a weekend partying etc so you’ll wanna check you can all share the driving!!
