      the character used for the word “fuck” in some parts of China (干 ) is also used for the adjective “dry”. What they meant was “dry material” (probably noodles or similar items).

      Marketing managers in China sometimes feel that traditional Chinese-English dictionaries are too “formal” in their tone, and use dictionaries with more slang/street terms; without fully knowing the meanings of some of the translations (and of course their staff are too embarrassed to admit what has happened) – a bit like the “emperors new clothes” and showing how a little knowledge is a dangerous thing…

                Yesterday I had to do some DIY work..

                I had recently bought a small hacksaw which was still in its packaging, and it had a label of safety info which said at the start

                “Warning : saws are sharp by design”…..
