  • Pretty well put together.

I’d disagree with a few points and the terminology seems to be written from the mind of an American but other than that It’s pretty good!

Nice to see partyvibe at the top of the list of links though 🙂 Raa!

bear in mind you are entitled to correct any inaccuracies – I’ve recently registered and have added a few bits to the “free party” entry.

the original article contains a caveat about the US-centric nature of the second half…

Auch wenn du am Abgrund stehst, und gar nichts mehr verstehst,
wachen Engel über dich, halten dich im Licht und lassen dich nie fallen.

I wouldn’t disagree with any of the factual info btw. Just some of the general conceptions about ravers, clubbers etc.

It doesn’t claim to be 100% accurate though and I think it’s really well done. Better than anything I could do by far.

Whoa!!! to much information to read. All I know is I enjoy a good knees up.

TBH its not really aimed at ravers but at curious outsiders who may be anywhere in the world, in the hope that the cuture can be documented and perhaps defended..

Bastards took first place for that keyword from us recently… grrr! :you_smart

i havent read that since before czechtek, and the addition is interesting. i think that while there are us-based comments, there are plenty of uk-based ones too, so i think its pretty balanced. well impressive bit of open-source journalism.

just reading the newest version of the entry…

Think the whole seperation of “goa trance” is interesting –
Quote: “These kind of ravers are generally more “hippy”-like in dress and philosophy, and sometimes prefer to distance themselves from the “rave” scene, avoiding the term “rave” when referencing their parties and culture”

I came into the scene back in the early nineties when my local crews played mostly psy trance and trance techno (they still do) – we were hippy types but always called our parties “raves” and there was always a policy of anything goes. I’ve been to Goa a few times – raves there have the same problems and issues as anywhere else and having a “hippy mentality” doesn’t avoid these issues.

there seems to be so much sectarianism these days (I’m referring here to some other threads on here recently – serious or not I’m not sure) – a party is a party and all dance music is there essentially to make you dance.
I may prefer some types of music over others (always loved psy trance, never really a fan of happy hardcore, but also love D&B) but I’ll give anything a go – especially if you’ve got a bunch of happy smiling people around you.

Seperating the culture like this isn’t just about music taste – this is about a hierarchy whereby people want to seperate certain parts of the scene to distinguish themselves is some way – disassociate themselves from the negative aspects of the culture they see “elsewhere”

I can’t help but think that this is ultimately counterproductive.
Don’t want to come across as a fluffy idealist “old” raver (crap – i turn 30 this year!) – but a rave is a rave and in my opinion diversity (music and personalities and culture) is a good thing.

    rant over…

that particular Wikipedia article was mostly contributed to by an American – in a country steeped in segregation their subcultures are more defined. Think of the subcultures in US high schools for an idea of how extensive this is.

It also does exist in the UK albeit to a lesser extent; ironically the cops brought together the different crews by forcing people to work together and share venues/co-ordinate logistics!

Even so I do think the scene is fairly balkanised and people are sometimes often co-dependent (i.e crews only work together because someone has a venue/generator/spare equipment) rather than co-operative..

Good point! I went to edit the wiki entry but didn’t feel up to it lol.

I think someone should make an addition in the top section of the page that states that they are the sort of party that is most closely related to the sort of party that humans have been having for millenia- hap-hazard gatherings around a fire with often rudimentary beat based music, invitations to which are usually recieved by word of mouth, and once the party has started anyone bringing a positive vibe is welcome.

I think it’s important this is mentioned at the top- it’s what makes free parties ‘free’ and totally different to commercial ‘parties’ where people can be turned away because they can’t afford to get in or wearing the wrong pair of shoes!!

I forgot my wikipedia account password ages ago but TBH if your edit is relatively non-controversial (like correcting a minor detail or spelling) then just click edit and do it (be careful not to trash links or formatting by mistake) and its very rarely reverted…

    Wiki page duly edited 🙂

It seems that the only drugs the person who wrote this knows of are generaly extacsy, LSD, and speed! If only he knew….:groucho:
