Tornado Destroyed Homes
Updated: 04:49, Friday December 08, 2006
More than 20 homes remain off limits today after a tornado brought devastation to a residential area of north London.
Local authorities in Kensal Green are preparing to assess the damage caused by yesterday's storm.
Six people were hurt and 150 homes were damaged when the freak weather hit the area.
It is feared the weakened chimneys of many of the properties could now be a serious safety hazard.
Authorites have confirmed that 24 houses are now uninhabitable, while other residents are only being allowed back into their homes to collect belongings.
Tornado struck in seconds
Local people are being looked after in a local hall and are being asked to call 020 8937 5255 for the latest information.
One man has been released from hospital after treatment for a minor head injury, while five people were treated at the scene for minor injuries and shock.
Insurers estimate that the damage will run into millions of pounds.
Reports of the tornado came in from Chamberlayne Road in Kensal Rise at 11am, and 25 fire engines were sent to the scene.
Dawn Butler, Labour MP for Brent South, told Sky News: "We have to try and make sure that those people who are put out and not able to get their belongings that it does not have a detrimental effect upon their Christmas."
Sky News weather forecaster Francis Wilson said tornadoes generate winds in excess of 100mph.

Sleepwalking! Anybody here who have tried sleepwalking??
Quote:
Jasmine will now move into a different bedroom at her home
A nine-year-old girl fell 30ft (9m) from her attic bedroom window while she was sleepwalking in the night. Miraculously, Jasmine Clark's fall was broken by an old carpet left in the driveway just hours before, and she escaped with only cuts and bruises.
Her father, David Clark, said Jasmine had sleepwalked in the past but the family thought she had grown out of it.
She will now move into a different bedroom at her Scarborough home to ensure it does not happen again.
Jasmine said: "I was sleepwalking and then I opened the window and fell out onto the drive, and I felt myself on the drive.
"When I woke up I felt like I had grazes all over me."
Gaping wound
The noise of her fall alerted Jasmine's parents, who ran outside to find her lying on the carpet in the driveway.
Mr Clark said: "She had a gaping wound to her chin and blood everywhere, and she was screaming for me.
"I ran to her and lifted her into my arms to try and comfort her."
Dr Andy Volans, of Scarborough Hospital, said Jasmine had been "very, very lucky".
He said: "There is an old wives' tale that you don't injure yourself if you sleepwalk, but physics would suggest that if you fall that far, you have got to hurt yourself."
She is a very lucky girl :weee:
UK : East : Clampdowns on smaller licensed events…. This weekend Suffolk Constabulary contacted the landlord of the Silver Star in an attempt to dissuade him from letting Flabbergast go ahead, claiming there were "links with illegal raves", and a "risk of disorder", and left the phone number of a police officer.
Promoter Dan Doolittle then this an officer and it was explained to the cop that Flabbergast is a legal event in licensed premises which complies with license conditions and there has been no trouble! The event went ahead as planned without any problems.
The cop also said he was asking questions because there had been a stabbing at a venue where another local drum and bass even was held; but there are no links between the other events and Flabbergast (other than the events play dance music!)
Another drum and bass event at the Station Hotel, Ipswich was closed down by the Police.
There have also been comments on DSI chatroom claiming that Bedfordshire Police visited the High Voltage night (hard dance and hardcore) and were "checking license conditions etc".
Of course people may start the night at one and then go on to somwhere else which may not be licensed; but the promoters cannot be expected to police what people do after the venue has closed...
OK cops have to try and stop violence/trouble but this won't happen by trying to frighten people away from playing dance music - and how come when trouble occurs at the big clubs like Zest and Liquid/Envy they don't get closure orders or their promoters put on surveillance?
In Essex where there are AFAIK no proper underground dance nights there is even more violence on the streets and still as much drugs being consumed; its hardly "made the streets safer"!
Most of these smaller licensed events are run by people who want to put on a decent night without the risks associated with unlicensed raves - if anything the authorities should be welcoming them; but it looks like we all need to stick up for one another to fight for our right to party even if people are doing stuff by the book....12

Guinness guzzling camel crashes Xmas party
Wed Dec 6, 2006 3:06 PM GMT
DUBLIN (Reuters) - Staff at an Irish riding school were forced to postpone festivities after Gus the camel chomped his way through 200 mince pies and several cans of Guinness intended for their Christmas party.
The 11-year-old camel, originally from Morocco, cracked open six cans of Ireland's famous stout with his teeth after the door to his stall was left open.
