See U There!!!
The Antiworld Crew!!!
UK : Wales/Cymru : BBC Cymru – neu *Heddlu?* welsh equivalent of "watchdog" becomes a police dog..
it is crime - but a bit concerned that the BBC are taking on law enforcement duties - particularly as they are subject to less "fair trial" restructions and their is an obvious commercial aspect of the entertainment value of the crime show..
Shoplifters caught by BBC cameras
Three women who were caught shoplifting by a BBC Wales television programme have been put under 18-month community rehabilitation orders. Linda McConkey, Beverley Hill and Wendy Bristock, all from Cardiff, were secretly filmed by Week In Week Out stealing from stores in south Wales.
The three admitted charges of conspiracy to steal at a hearing at Swansea Crown Court on Friday.
Judge Gerald Price said the women had been "shamed by the BBC".
The court heard that the defendants were followed by the Week in Week Out crew as they stole clothing from six shops in Swansea in October 2002.
McConkey, 51, from Splott, Hill, 42, from Tremorfa, and Gristock, 38, from Roath, were filmed using cameras hidden inside handbags.
Bill Peters, prosecuting, told the court that the women had carried empty, branded shopping bags into the stores and then shielded each other as they stole clothes.
The value of what they had stolen was not discovered but "the bags were bulging", Mr Peters said.
They then took the clothing to a fast food restaurant, hiding price tags and hangers in the toilets.
'Deeply ashamed'
A week later, the court heard, another Week In Week Out crew followed McConkey and Hill as they stole from three shops in Bridgend.
The footage was handed over to police and the women were arrested.
Mr Peters described them as "well-organised shoplifters", telling the court that McConkey had six previous convictions for the offence, and Hill and Gristock both had nine.
The women's defence barristers said their clients had been deeply ashamed at being publicly identified by BBC Wales and that members of their families had also been humiliated by the exposure.
They also criticised the two-and-a-half years it had taken for the case to be brought to court.
Judge Price said he had taken this into account when deciding not to hand down custodial sentences.
Instead, he imposed 18-month community rehabilitation orders on each of the women, and ordered McConkey and Hill to carry out 80 hours of unpaid community work, to attend a women's programme, and to pay £150 costs.
He ordered Gristock to carry out 60 hours' community work and pay £100 costs.
Judge Price told the court that each defendant has a criminal past for similar behaviour and had carried out their operations "with a degree of sophistication".
He said they had been "shamed by the BBC" and that they should feel "absolute disgrace".
curiously no Welsh version of this article.... (or not an easily searchable one, stil getting to grips with the concept of mutations...)
improving our image – any ideas? We all know that ravers often are viewed with suspicion by the wider public and are suspected of widespread criminal and anti-social activity - although in truth the worst of this is usually small time use of relatively harmless recreational drugs, and there is a "values system" amongst our community which at least tries to keep things in check (our drugs forum is a good example of this)
the truth is of course that whilst a small minority are problematic (and some are unrepentant in public as they think its a "fight back" against oppression) the majority of ravers are not only involved in productive employment but other positive work... when I look at "users online" here I see stacks of people from Oxbridge, good schools, prestigious public and private sectory employers and voluntary sector organisations...
this seems very similar to the situation of ethnic minorities in the UK.
I'm playing the "race card" to an extent on this post but in a positive manner as I'm using my own experiences as a British Asian in the UK...
I was thinking about my recent post on immigration - I highlighted the good work done by the Indian opticians, and Globaloon mentioned how the asylum seekers did all the voluntary work with the kids etc....
In both cases the white citizens may not have initially liked them - but in Reading the community can see better because of the new entrants, in Exeter their contribution was instantly missed by the community once they were gone..
and setting up a rave (licensed or otherwise) requires valuable organisational skills that can be transferred to other aspects of your life - I use my technical and logistic skills I've learnt from this scene for both weekends and my "legit" employment (a responsible job in the public sector where I have introduced a number of systems to substantially save taxpayer-funded resources)
perhaps if we highlighted the positive aspects of our lifestyle (either through events like Ambient picnic, synergy or other similar projects) it would help at least some of the outsiders to realise this scene is not as "evil" as tabloids paint it to be?12
any partys in the west mids D&b just wondering if there were any free partys happening in the westmids that play drum & bass all the ones i ever hear about are hard house or techno anything would be a bonus. p.m me if u wish THANX
FrenchTek Caterpillar Warning! I have just had an email discussion with a Senior Invertebrate Ecologist at English Nature regarding the irritant caterpillars that caused problems at Frenchtek, and similar species that exist in the UK (from the brown-tail moth).
He has advised that there is a real danger of this species becoming established in the United Kingdom due to climate change - once established they are here to stay.
One risk would be from females being introduced via camping equipment or imported goods (the males already fly over here now and then)
A few breeding pairs could easily establish the species - and because of their poisonous nature they have few natural predators. They also present even more danger to humans than the native UK brown-tail species as the European ones "march" in large numbers (They are also called "processionary caterpillars")
Please check your vehicles and camping equipment, and eliminate any of these creatures you may find alive with any Defra approved pesticide.
Wear PPE such as gloves, masks (you will need to if usingf pesticides) and do not touch the caterpillars or their carcasses). Do not squash them as you may come into contact with the irritant hairs. They are as dangerous dead as they are alive.
Bury the carcasses.
Do not let children, domestic pets come into contact with them.
If you or anyone else does suffer a severe allergic reaction , call the Ambulance Service on 999 or 112.
If your pet is affected, call the emergency number of your vet immediately. Just 3 or 4 can kill a large dog.
I do not think there is a major risk to all areas (only hotter parts of the UK) and admittedly my advice does sound like something out of a disaster movie - but having spoken to a friend who was affected by them (he is recovering but still sounds unwell) it is prudent to take heed of what the man from EN says and keep these creatures at bay as much as possible
Remember - their habitats are much the same as our preferred spaces for open-air fun..
this is also a real example of what global warming means...

Clubs in Reading? Hey guys, I'm heading down to Reading next month to visit a friend and I promised her a while back to take her to a techno/psy-trance night. Thought it would be cool to go somewhere there, a bit of an adventure for both of us!
Anyone know of any decent nights in Reading? I've found Checkpoint Charlie but it looks a bit too house'y for my tastes.
