The Synergy Team
Kakatsitsi @ Synergy As summer approaches, and our thoughts turn to the fields, Synergy returns with one last indoor festival before we head off to the outdoors.
Friday 29th April sees the welcome return to Synergy of Kakatsitsi, an amazing group of drummers, dancers and singers from Ghana, West Africa, who will be launching their 2005 UK tour.
(insert picture here).
Kakatsitsi are one of West Africa's leading drumming groups, having previously toured the UK 6 times, performing at Glastonbury, WOMAD and the Sidmouth International Festival, as well as working with a wide variety of local authority partners on educational projects. Offering positive and inspiring images of African people, in contrast to those of poverty and suffering broadcast by the Western media, Kakatsitsi's educational work focuses on raising racial and cultural awareness and the emphasises the importance of participation in the local cultural activities to preserve a sense of local community, as an alternative to the growing alienation of our society of mass cultural production and consumption.
In partnership with their parent company, Indigenous People and Survival International, they will be hosting a room exploring the historic relationship between traditional African and contemporary Western dance culture.
The room will open with DJ Money Pilot of Whirl-y-Gig, opening the night with some mellow, global dance grooves. At 12.15, resident Synergy shamanic poet John Crow will conduct a brief Ancestral Invocation, calling on the spirits of Ancient Southwark to attend. After a short procession through the venue, Kakatsitsi will begin their set at 12.30, with their own call to the Ancestors, in the form of a traditional Libation Ceremony, in which the group leader, Nii Kwartei Owoo, will summon his forefathers to bless and sanctify the gathering. Thereafter, the group will play non stop until 2am, with their unique blend of Djmebe riffs layered onto accessible rhythms from a variety of West African traditions as well as call and response interplays between the Djembes and other less well known drums such as Osrama, Atumpani, Sogo, Kiri and Gome. Bamboo flutes provide the melodies, complemented by traditional chants, arranged in 6 part harmony. Kakatsitsi's performance will be accompan
ied by a video installation of 'Images of Jamestown' documenting the social context of their music in their home fishing community of Jamestown, Accra and a 6 screen slide show of images of tribal peoples, courtesy of Survival.
At 2am, the psy-trance begins with Tron (Liquid Records), Dark Angel (Project Ozma) and Ross (Liquid Connective). Décor, using cloth from Mali and Ghana, will also feature masks and statues from Ghana, completing the tribal ambience.
In the other rooms will be the Peace Not War Collective, IDSpiral & Hafla, The Interdimensional Circus and Bingly Bongly, full line-ups for which can be found at http://www.thesynergyproject.org, plus the customary Synergy fringe of campaign stalls, wholefood cafes, healers, jugglers and the warmest, friendliest community vibes in the capital.
For more information on Kakatsitsi, please visit http://www.indignouspeople.org.uk or contact them at steve@indigenouspeople.f9.co.uk.
see you then...

Germany – current sociopolitical situation? I've been reading a fair bit about Germany recently (unfortunately mostly only in English due to laziness), and see a lot of reports claiming that there are many problems and that social and economic growth has stagnated.
I'm aware that at the last elections the people elected [mostly] a red-green coalition of socialists and environmentalists, which coupled with the often progressive and pragmatic thinking found in Germany I would have thought would have produced a much better situation...
so what is going on here? I read about a Bundestag (like Britain's house of commons) and the Bundesrat (a cross between the House of Lords and our devolved government in Wales and Scotland, but unelected, or are they like a big city council?)
are there then powerful conservative elements in the other parliament house, who are blocking the progressive work of the peoples elected representatives (and vice versa) so nothing actually gets done? I also get the impression (from my travels there in 2001 on business) that the nation is divided and is more conservative in the south.. (hence easttek was left alone and south-tek busted) is this true?
I would like to go there again soon, but in these "interesting times" prefer to know what is going on in a country before I visit!
don’t tell me this can’t have happened I am curious as whether someone could explain the following:
It happened to me twice, about two years ago, that I snorted a line of mdma, but didn't come up from it at all. (I didn't want to overdo so once I stayed straight, the other time i did pills)
The drugs itself were fine, several other people did a line of the same stuff and they were fucked all right.
Weirder yet, rather than not having any effect at all, once the party was over in each of the cases I was incredibly tired and slept for almost twenty hours (those were one nighter parties I must have gone to bed at about 7 in the morning).

Beyond virtual reality some crazy robot
the future is now
One step on from virtual reality, augmented reality takes the real world and digitally distorts and transforms what we see around us. David Reid takes a trip to the Swiss City of Basel to experience it.
Basel, with the Rhine running through it, has long been a lure for tourists.
But there is a potential new feature on the sightseeing map, which could help tourists better explore the town.
LifeClipper, a project created by new media organisation Plug. In, gives artists the digital tools to prise open the doors of perception.
The augmented reality system is entirely put together with off-the-shelf components.
A head-mounted camera, for instance, acts as the eyes.
As the subject makes his or her way around the tour, global positioning satellites help trigger visual high-jinks in the rucksack computer according to whichever zone the subject has wandered into.
Nikki Neecke, a sound-designer and musician for LifeClipper, says: "We have developed different scenes of picture sets and music, and we use the GPS to determine where we are in the street.
"So if I go to the border of the Rhine it is different from when I go to the church, and that's done using GPS."
It sounds straightforward enough. So I decided to give it a go.
LSD psychedelia
The first difficulty was simply getting used to a robot's eye-view of the world, with low resolution and cramped field of view.
It is very, very difficult to walk with the apparatus on because there is a very slight delay between your actions and what you see through your eyes.
When I walked past a paper mill I could see the inner workings, and hear the sound of the mechanics thumping in my ears.
In 1943 Doctor Albert Hoffman invented LSD in Basel, and there is an amazing section of the tour that plunges the user into full-blown psychedelia.
However, a slight shift in reality is often more powerful than a massive one.
Jan Torpus, new media artist for LifeClipper, says: "We are not trying to develop a new technology here.
"We are trying to find a language for this new technology. That's an important part."
Plug. In's Annette Schindler adds: "It kind of materialises our imagination, something that happens in our head, also without the head-set and the computer on our back."
Open-air art
Seeing may be believing, but turn the world on its head and there is only so much we will find convincing.
By making subtle changes to what we see, augmented reality often goes one better than virtual reality.
And when it comes to playing tricks with our senses, the devil is often in the detail, as Jan Torpus explains.
"It has been said pretty often that the little changes - which make you think: 'what was that? Was it real or not?' - are much stronger than if you make an MTV show out of it."
The creators of LifeClipper see it more as an open-air art project than a new technology.
Many who have done the tour say it is like living a movie.
Jan and Nikki, however, are not so interested in Hollywood-style rags-to-riches and commercially exploiting their system.
They would prefer to take their equipment to other venues and develop new dimensions to their walking experience.
