DIY chemist jailed for 20 years
An American chemist found guilty of running a multi-million pound LSD factory has been jailed for 20 years.
Casey Hardison, 33, of The Vale, Ovingdean, near Brighton, used the title of "doctor" and created a research lab, Lewes Crown Court heard.
Jailing him, Judge Anthony Niblett said one of the worst features was his decision to set up the factory in the UK because US drug laws were "too hot".
Hardison was convicted of producing, possessing and smuggling drugs.
DIY drugs book
During the hearing, the court heard Hardison spent £38,386 on chemicals which he bought from pharmaceutical companies.
He used a book of DIY drugs recipes to produce a number of hallucinogenic drugs.
The court heard Hardison boasted youngsters in Britain were keen on a drug nicknamed 2CI, which it was claimed he came to the UK to produce.
The court was told Hardison's father used some of the money made to buy a yacht.
'Dangerous individual'
Officers began covertly watching Hardison after a parcel he sent to the US was found to contain four bags of ecstasy after random checks.
He was arrested in Hove in February last year.
Police raided his house and found a drugs factory and a fridge full of chemicals, estimated to be capable of producing drugs with a street value of £5m.
Hardison claimed to have a degree in biochemistry and botany and defended himself throughout the trial.
He was found guilty of three counts of producing hallucinogenic drugs, one count of possessing 145,000 wraps of LSD, one count of possession, and one of smuggling drugs to the USA.
Judge Anthony Niblett said Hardison's actions were motivated by greed and said he was a "dangerous individual".

Pharmacists 'denying birth control'
A growing number of pharmacists across America are refusing to dispense birth control and the morning-after pill, because it goes against their religious and moral convictions.
This development has led to state legislatures across the country taking action, either to protect women's rights to obtain birth control or to uphold the pharmacist's right to refuse it.
The issue has become heated in several states, which already have laws allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for contraceptives, including birth control pills.
In Arizona, the House of Representatives recently approved legislation that would put into place a conscience clause for pharmacists who have objections to handing out birth control.
But in April, Illinois Governor Rod R Blogojevich filed a rule requiring Illinois pharmacies to dispense all such prescriptions immediately and without question.
'Humiliated and traumatised'
"More and more pharmacists do not want to hand over the birth control package and feel that it is within their rights to lecture women about their morals," said Judy Waxman of the National Women's Law Centre in Washington DC.
There are many incidences of pharmacists not giving back the prescription so that the women can fill it somewhere else."
At a Brooks pharmacy in Laconia, New Hampshire, Suzanne Richards, a 21-year-old single mother with a 3-year-old son, was denied the morning after pill because of the pharmacist's religious convictions.
He told Richards he would not fill her prescription because "it would end the fertilisation process of the egg in the embryo" and, based upon his religious beliefs, it was wrong.
It was Saturday night in this rural town - all other pharmacies were closed, leaving Richards without an option.
Richards says she felt "humiliated and traumatised", and was too frightened to approach another pharmacist the next day, allowing the 72-hour limit for taking the pill to pass.
'A chemical abortion'
While it turns out that Richards was not pregnant, Waxman considers this a breach of professional responsibility.
"The sad thing is that a very small and very loud minority is trying to thwart women from getting their basic health care needs," she said.
Pharmacist Pitt Philips from North Carolina defends the decision of pharmacists to refuse to dispense the morning-after pill.
"While they have the right to obtain the prescription, as an individual I always have my own rights not to fill it."
Supporters of pharmacists' rights, like Steven Aden of the Christian Legal Centre for Law and Religious freedom, believe that "in no case should a health care worker do something that violates their conscience".
Phillips said: "In essence, I would be causing a chemical abortion, and as a Christian, I am impelled not to do anything that destroys life."
The debate, between the women's right to birth control and the pharmacist's right to choose which prescriptions to fill, will only intensify further if the Food and Drug Administration approves the sale of the morning-after pill without a prescription.
If this contentious decision is approved, it is likely to make pharmacists the primary dispenser, intensifying the dispute further.

The festival series part II
Everyone from Cohesion, Skankadelic, Noizworks, Six-Six-Six, Sonic Vision, Lost & The Funk Station would just like to say a big thanks to everybody who attended underground city @ the custard factory on the 25th March. It was wicked to see 750 + partygoers turning out to show there support on our first night, and I think I speak for most when I say a what a top night with a great atmosphere was had by all!! Every room was f~*kin avin’ it!!
Our apologies go out to the owner of whoever’s shop it was next to the drum & bass rig that ended up with it’s glassware being smashed by the vibrations from the rig. You got to say though that’s some mental bass action.
Those who stayed till the end will probably have seen a flyer for the next underground city, due to a double booking at the venue we have moved the night to the legendary venue “The Sanctuary” also in Digbeth Birmingham, but don’t worry the line up with remain exactly the same with a few extra additions!! We will be able to put in more décor, light and rig, as we were limited at the custard factory due to restrictions with the décor. There has been some questions about the door staff at the sanctuary (the stigma is from about 5 years ago and it has defiantly changed) don’t worry we are assured that they are friendly and polite.
We have teamed up with some great promoters to bring 5 rooms of top quality music, by world respected djs and producers alike. Each room is being hosted by a separate promotion, bringing a whole variety of clubbers all together under one roof, again expect the unexpected we pride ourselves on the overall production of the evening.
