UK : Hat tip to RS (Radiospares) British electronics components distributors Yesterday I ordered a parcel of various small components for a work project (indicator lamps and relays for an alarm system) from RS or Radiospares as the older generations might remember it (when I was in high school we would order components from them, although back then you needed a trade account).
They were initially a bit slow to provide easy online purchases (although they did have a website even in the late 90s it wasn't particularly easy to use) but recently updated it. (RS Components | Electronic and Electrical Components)
Their stock is a good mixture of "ultra modern" stuff and tried and tested items (or new developments such as small LED indicator lamps).
I was particularly impressed today when the parcel arrived in a sensibly sized box and other than the components that are traditionally packaged in sealed plastic (often a special kind that stops static electricity blowing up sensitive items) all the filler material used so they remain in one piece after going via Royal Mail or Parcelforce was plain recycled paper - a mixture of traditional brown and a somewhat "metrosexual" shade of magenta - wouldn't be surprised if that is either something to do with encouraging "diversity in engineering" and/or suggested by Germany and Denmark (where a lot of the stuff are still made) :laugh_at:
Even the sales flyers are on recycled paper with the biodegradable soya ink and not excessive (another supplier I use sends me 5 copies of the same thing to every place I work at and my home address!)
Then again a lot of the engineers who use RS are "old skool" from 1980s or even before then and grew up in the days when you repaired stuff before replacing it or designed your own systems rather than expecting it all to be done by pre-built China hardware and a mobile phone app :laugh_at:
UK : England : NE : Article about rave scene in NE Interesting article - especially as its very recent (mentioning mephedrone and a Volkswagen Lupo; both of which were less well known a few years ago - I had to look up the car having never heard of it, it is even smaller than a Polo so impressive the lad managed to get both sound equipment and passengers into it at all :laugh_at: )
what is going on there is identical to the coastal areas further down South; whilst events are tolerated / balkanised into W and NW England.
its possible the local Councils on the Western coast of the UK are more dependent on income from night time economy as the ports and fishing grounds and maritime industries aren't as good as the Eastern coast (this appears to have been going on for some decades)

EU : Partyfriends advice (updated 2016 with EU wide site) This is from a worker of a Unity, a Dutch drugs advice organisation. Although the rest of the site is in Dutch (I was looking there to see what advice was given) this bit is in English as it was intended as a shared project for EU drugs agencies for "European Partyfriends" (and got otherwise overlooked as the EU funded it but clearly didn't have the balls/cojones/kloten to stand up to the conservative news media in various countries and publicise it well).
The advice is still good, and if we in the UK did party like that then there might be more events licensed here compared to the EU..
[h=3]Ben jij een partyfriend?[/h] Who doesn’t like a good party? I know I do! In fact I think it’s so much fun that even after years of partying and at age 30, I still can’t get quite enough of it. And most of the time it is a lot of fun indeed, but sometimes things do happen. Here’s a few pointers. Feel free to share your own!
[h=2]Talk, Inform & Agree[/h] Inform your friends about how you feel and how you’re going to feel. So tell them what you’re taking and when. Ask them to do the same and try to agree to each others choices. Do you know your limits? Do you know your friends’ limits? And it doesn’t hurt to talk about what sort of day you all had before the party. If you’ve had a bad day at work it’s very well possible it’ll affect your party mood. It’s something us peer educators call set - your mindset, mood and expectations. Set and setting (setting being the location – the party and the people you’re with) are rather important factors that craft your party experience, even more so when you go out tripping.
[h=2]Keep Your Friends (and Yourself) Safe[/h] Everyone knows not to drink and drive. Still many people do it. Most people taking GHB know not to mix with alcohol (if you don’t -> never ever even try this!). Still people do it. STOP! Please make every effort to stop them from doing that, or other stupid things. When you’re partying hard you might feel very much alive, and being intoxicated may have you feel invincible. But really, dead can be just around the corner. You won’t be the first. Public transport is your friend. Water is your friend. But don’t drink insane amounts of water either – it can lead to water poisoning and eventually dead as well. Be Safe. Be Good.
Did you know? Even when you’ve been partying completely sober there’s no guarantee you’ll make for a safe driver. The lack of sleep greatly decreases your driving skills. Don’t fall asleep behind the steering wheel, please.
[h=2]Show Your Support[/h] It is so easy to show your support for the DJ. You just throw your hands up in the air when he throws in a new bomb and that’s it. Yeah! Bravo bravo. It’s hell of a lot more difficult to show your support for a friend (or stranger) who’s having a difficult time, especially when you yourself are having the time of your life. But please, do it. Don’t abandon your friends. Show your support. Show your support by supporting them. Take them to the chill out area, get them a refreshing water and talk to them. And with talk I don’t mean telling them how stupid they’ve been by doing what they did. They know, and if you insist on educating them do so when you’re back home and recovered. Instead speak about the good things in life, about some hot girl you both saw or a moment you had together. Take care of them.
IMPORTANT: if a friend or stranger is out cold and non-responsive to pain, the chill-out area won’t cut it anymore and you should call professional help as soon as possible – security or first aid. Don’t wait. People have died because their friends thought they could wait it out.
[h=2]Be There for Strangers[/h] I don’t know about you but when I go out to a party, I party alone and with everyone. Even when I head out with 20 or more friends, I’m still talking and having fun with strangers. At a party or festival everyone there is your friend. So when you see a lone stranger wander around with a sad face, why not try helping them out? He (or she) is just as much a party friend as the people that you do know. Offer them some water when you see they need it. Offer to walk them to the chill out area. Sit with them for a bit. They’ll feel better. And guess what, you’ll feel even better for helping a stranger out.
[h=2]Enjoy Every Second[/h] Parties last for hours on end. Festivals for even longer. What comes up does come down. Extreme feelings of euphoria and happiness will eventually turn into feeling worn out, exhausted and tired. This may even lead to irritations, but there’s no need. Try to see it as part of the game. It’s called a coming down. It’s not the end of the world. Some proper sleep and food and you’re all good to go again. So why not try and enjoy yourself even during and after the coming down? It’s possible, if you want to. And why wouldn’t you want to? Ban the negative!
[h=2]So, Are You A Party Friend?[/h] This is my mindset how I like to go into the parties and festivals I visit. I do like to believe I make for a good party friend, but it’s not really up to me to decide… so what do you think? And what do you do to be a party friend? Share in the comments! Oh and here’s the website of The European Party Friends Night. I myself work for the Dutch alcohol & drugs harm reduction project called Unity – find us on the web, on Facebook or at major raves and festivals.

NL : TNT post return pill package to random Dutch household! The residents are not drug users and notified cops immediately (who have seized the package for investigation).
According to cops the package was intended for an overseas address but was returned (possibly either due to a control at NL Douane or the customs at the country receiving the package) - and the senders put random return addresses on the packages
it appears the Dutch postal administration gets suspicious if someone goes to all the trouble of filling up a package and does not put a valid NL return address on it although that might simply be how society works in NL - although (or maybe because) they have strong privacy laws it seems that Dutch people trust both their private and public sector organisations much more with personal info..

NL : Trimbos harm reduction service *was* indeed set up by a Catholic professor! I'd been curious about the origins of Trimbos for a while (we've been relaying their content for years), even more so since my Dutch improved to the point I can read at least some of their Dutch language content. I'd noticed that the younger folk in NL tended to mistrust it slightly as it works very closely with the govt and national health service, and its advice did indeed often resemble the sort of stuff you'd get from the better Christian led drugs advice centres.
Today I found out why - Professor Kees Trimbos (whom the institute is named after) was the director of the Catholic Mental Health Research Service in Utrecht!
Although he drifted away from the church due to disagreements over the level of tolerance of LGBT communities (which he advocated) and his warnings in 1950s about the risk of sexual abuse within traditionalist Catholic circles were also ignored (he even suggested at Vatican Council II the church should go further and abolish the vows of celibacy required of priests) he did still manage to actually get sex education programmes onto Catholic TV in NL in the 1960s [1]
The alcohol and drugs research institute formed in his name (which is a lot newer, from 1996) is today responsible for nearly all the harm reduction info about MDMA that is available today...

Perceptions of legal high use (online survey) – all welcome! Hi,
I am a PhD student at London South Bank University and I am researching personal beliefs related to legal high use. If anyone has time, I'd be grateful if you could complete an online survey which takes about 15 minutes. This would really give us some interesting insights into various types of drug use and what sort of factors influence people's decisions whether or not to use a particular type of drug. I'd like to encourage a broad spectrum of people to take part in this research project (regardless of whether they have taken any legal highs or illicit drugs before). This is an international study and no restrictions on country of residence exist.
The study has been reviewed and ethically approved via London South Bank University Research Ethics Committee (ref. 1457).
As a token of my appreciation, all respondents will be entered into a prize draw for a £50 Amazon voucher (if you wish to do so). The draw will take place on 1st August 2016 . The results will be available after the submission of my PhD thesis during 2017.
If you are interested in taking part, please follow the link below and feel free to share it with others.

UK : England : Mids : Dexys midnite runners 1980s interview on kids TV First time I've heard this for years (everyone involved is now middle aged so can't get in any trouble)...
some background - in Britain from the 1970s to mid 2000s it was common for the TV channels to put on a live studio based show on Saturday Mornings for "children" but at least in the 80s/90s was often still popular with teenagers and young adults.
There was no digital delay against "non compliant content" going to air; everything was 100% live from the studios (this recording is from 1980 when any delay equipment would be way too expensive for deployment anywhere other than sports for action replays).
The show in question was notorious in its era for ad lib anarchic behaviour amongst both guests and the presenters and did not always strictly follow scripts. Such shows usually transmitted from 10:00 AM (or earlier); there is usually about 2-3 hours advance preparation for any such live TV or radio show so guests and presenters would have to be up very early and also seem happy and enthusiastic enough to deal with a hectic studio full of loud kids and all sorts else :laugh_at:
