  • i dont mean to be negative or depressive, i’m personally lovin life at the moment but i mean the country as a whole.

seems to me we are so divided as a nation, no signle style of music or political agenda to unite us. noone gives a shit where we are heading, many people are really unhappy with the state we are in and for many the solution is to go get smashed on cheap booze or heavily cut drugs. addicts and abusers are everywhere! kids grow up in concrete jungles abused and neglected by parents with drug gangs everywhere.

for me it isn’t entirely like this but for the country… i dunno. sorry for bringin in a negative post but i wish i could be positive about the state of the country at the moment. um… well, we do have a kick-arse music scene in general i reckon raaa

edit: i mean socially not economically by the way. it aint too bad and we have a lot to be thankful for, but a long way to go until the population can be trusted (wrong word?) not to abuse more freedom!

in what way do you mean, economic or spiritual depression?

I think economically Britain’s doing comparatively well, despite the war and intense competition from globalisation; but there is a spiritual problem…

you are right this country is divided – and there is a terrible binge culture here..

but at the same time its the individualism and stubbornness that makes the music and arts scene develop

I am worried though that a lot of problems are simply due to peoples lack of self control when they are actually given an amount of freedom (and that means us) and this risks handing over a victory to the nanny state/social control advocates..

social n spiritual depression i suppose, we are doing well economically altho i dont really know much about that, i’m just sayin what i see everyday really.

personally i reckon we need another 60’s or 89 again. something that unites people and creates a good vibe. but the government seemed to target these which i didnt understand cos apparently theyd rather have a nation of violence and paranoia, with so much mistrust :you_crazy

it annoys me cos there are also a lotta people which are decent people and deserve the freedom and we aint recievin it, cos the majority are too fuckin stupid!

im pretty optomisitic (always am) for the future tho, hopefully we’ll have another amazin scene comin soon that is summat we all hold onto!

I would agree we have sacrificed some of our spiritual balance, on the altar of economic growth, but then, as Maggie said, ‘there is no such thing as society.’!?!

We have economically outperformed most of Europe for the best part of 20 years, yet our kids have a really shit time, i think those 2 facts are not entirely unconnected.

Of course, what the Americans called the ‘Depression’ in the 30’s, was an economic recession. I think a recession is defined as 3 or 4 sucessive quarters (of a year), of negative growth, roughly.

I think the last one (we had) was in the early 90’s, most of the folks on here won’t remember it.

But if you think life’s bad now, you really didn’t wanna be around for the kind of shit that went down in the 70’s and 80’s.

The ‘3 day week’, 3 million unemployed and double digit inflation. i don’t think the young uns would know what hit ’em, if it happened now! Kids 2day cant do 8 hours without Playstation/ tv… cant imagine what regular power cuts would do to them!:groucho:

There would have to be a queueing system for Beachy Head, and that bridge near Bristol (damn, i can’t remember its name).

Hay ho, its not as bad as all that, we are lucky we live now, in many ways… chin up!

yeah i dont really mean economically, just socially. maybe i just wish more people were a bit more united rather than so didvided. and that we had more freedom!

chin is certainly up, we could be a lot better but also a lot lot worse! raaa

I was about the same age as boothy is now during the “summer of love” 1989 and TBH it is looked upon by many with rose-coloured specs.

Access to that scene was confined to a select in-crowd with a lot of resources and money – there weren’t any free parties in those days, it was £25 entry and £20 per pill…. a lot of parties actually still got closed down and raided (after you had paid the money!) and there were lots of rip offs.

By the end of 1989 gangsters had infilitrated the scene and there were various incidents of violence. The media hyped it up; and the resulting backlash led to various clampdowns…

I didn’t get to a rave until the hippy/squatter/traveller lot had started the underground free party movement without entry prices and that was around 1991/2

and a lot of the unity was only due to drugs. There was still all the cultural, racial and gender tension amongst communities and it came back when people were on the comedown, or when anti-drugs enforcement was stepped up as a backlash to people overdoing it and getting on heroin/crack etc..

the party scene today is no worse and in some ways (particularly technology and people being able to get involved) a lot better IMO…

as for freedom, since the 80s there has been a lot more freedom about drugs, sex, cultural expression. I would agree though with those who think there are constant attempts to roll back this freedom, and we all need to be vigilant, but even so I think you can get away today with a lot more than you could in 1988 or even 1994….

I’m kinda hopin the smokin ban and global warming will give free parties a kick in the pants this summer, really!
