  • we’re off in the magic van to Boom and wanna take the Wrong’Uns rig along with us but know absolutley f’all about generators– the rigs a 3k homebuilt affair, and we wanna be able to run some lights as well, any advice bout makes, models or peeps wantin to flog gear would be ACE 😀
    xx

you need a diesel generator [petrol ones tend to surge if overloaded or fuel runs out – we lost our bottom end because of a petrol generator and it was very expensive]

diesel generators are also more fuel efficient

you will probably need a 5 KVa or more generator to run your rig and lights safely and not strain any of the equipment

[anyone else have any comments? disagree with what i have said?]

remember to check what kind of plugs are on the generators power board and get any necessary converters if you dont have them:wink:

..not to mention safer too! Munters, raves, fags/joints & unsecured petrol is not a good recipe!

    I ‘d agree mate.

Nasty: If it was just the rig you could safely get away with a 3kva or even a 2.5kva genny! Lights however draw a constant load (unlike a soundsystem) off the genny and they do require large amounts of power so even 4 scans and 2 strobes are likely to draw about 2500 – 3000 watts.

Good advice. Make sure the genny has a 32a (or 2x 16a) ceeform output and you are supplied with the necessary distribution. For example, if all your equipment uses 13amp house plugs then you will need a distro board that will plug in to the blue 32amp ceeform outlet and then provide you with a bank of 13amp plug sockets. It would be a nightmare to get to the venue and then realise you can’t plug anything in.

think this post is in the wrong place 😉

where was it supposed to go?

safe for the advice !:horay: :horay: :horay:
i was gonna try and run the lights off the invertor we’ve got in the van, though its only 300w, so i dunno if im gonna have enough there— as for genny’s i was thinkin of looking on eBay unless anyone knows somewhere else i can find a good cheap’un…?

Ebay is probably OK, but you want to make sure you can see it, and more importantly hear it run before you commit to buying it. If you haven’t heard it run, you can’t be sure the engine isn’t knackered, and knackered engine=scrap yard for a jenny.

Jenny’s are far more sensitive to neglect on the servicing front than cars etc, as the engines are driven under constant high rev/light load conditions for an engine. While they are designed for this, it is still difficult conditions for an internal combustion engine. If you forget to oil them, or change the fluids regularly, they end up useless very quickly. Flogging them on ebay would be a good way to get rid of one that’s dieing, as the buyer normally won’t be able to inspect it, and the seller only has to claim that “it runs”…

That said, you might also be able to turn up a real bargain too…:love::love:

You could also consider hiring one for the week or two, and tow it (hire companies do Jenny’s with wheels, and a tow ball which you could probably take with you) Prices are fairly good usually, and they. Last time we did this, we used A-Plant , who have 10KVa jobbies, which come with tails etc if you ask for them.

That would give you time to shop around, as you can get really good deals – we just got offered a 5.5KVa silent diesel, brand new, from our friendly “Irish bloke in a white van full of tools”…:bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl for £750… Didn’t have the cash, but will be saving up for next time…

Probably not a good idea for any lights other than LED disco lights. The dichroics alone in most lights are around 60-100w, and any kind of strobe will have silly wattage bulbs. Run them off the jenny, and make sure they are supplied on a different MCB to the sound system (that way if a bulb blows, it won’t trip the rig, and pop speakers)

Oh yeah, and also don’t forget to take an earthing spike for the jenny (seen too many jenny’s run without at parties – not a problem until something goes wrong, and you end up with a live casing on some piece of equipment. Then a real problem of the possible smoking boots variety…)

That might explain why our amp was fucked when we got it home after the petrol genny ran out of fuel.we had assumed it just got broke.

its likely to have its power rails incinerated if the 13 amp fuse in the plug didnt go or it didnt have internal sacrificial fuses; only amps i have which have survived a petrol generator surge are all Peaveys – those old workhorses all survived to play on in our new rig:groucho:

check the plug fuse if you havent already then open the amp up and look to see if it had any sacrificial fuses which might have saved it – otherwise look for the pretty scorch marks [ or smell for the TCP like smell] to see what fried :groucho:

The whole thing stinks-I think I need a new one:hopeless: Morning by the way

good morning to you too:wink: and a very good day

for next time may i recommend a computer surge protection board between the generator and the equipment – they are much cheaper and less hassle to replace than the amps:groucho: [and we use them now too][remember to check they are still working before you reuse them too – had a friend who didnt check the one on his PC regularly and wound up with fried silicon chips as a result:crazy:]

in an ideal world you put in a Voltage Control Regulator board but these are expensive to own and i have never been able to hire one out here in the sticks:bounce_fl:bounce_fl:bounce_fl

Back to your original comment,I think We will go the diesel route next time:wink:Have passed your other suggestions on to our electrical guy,Thanks.
You have a good day tooraaaraaa

IME most gensets owned by rave crews (particularly younger ones) have been ragged big time. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve reminded people about oil etc – it seems that people seem to think their equipment runs by magic without needing maintenance/checking..

    yes

i often get asked to restart them when they are grumpy and usually what it wrong is dirty filters or dirty oil – the owner/hirer’s face is normally a kodak moment type picture when i start to strip bits off their generator and swear about the state of them – they tend to panic when i have pulled off bits they have never touched in their lives:you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy:you_crazy

its amazing how their faces change when i can get them started though…:groucho:
