basic diesel engine maintenance tips are as follows: :wink::wink:
change the oil with clockwork regularity for a happy engine [generators even more so than normal car engines] – check the manual for the right grade of oil – it is a slightly higher spec than the equivalent petrol engine oil [though some oil is always better than no oil!!]
always check the oil level before you start a generator; could be expensive otherwise:wink: on two counts: first it may stop working without it and second it will be significantly less fuel efficient if there isnt enough oil!
replace the air filter every six months or when the generator seems a little sluggish; if you havent ever done it before do it now!!! this also improves the efficiency of the engine and its fuel efficiency:wink:
try to never let the fuel run dry – repriming a diesel engine can be a right pain in the backside:crazy:
and finally check it starts well before you actually need it – nothing worse than getting to a party and being unable to start your generator:hopeless:
I agree with all that has been said about diesel genny’s, inherently much more efficient.
I would also add one thing though.
Biodiesel.
A diesel engine will run on biodiesel without any modifications and with the price of oil and petro-diesel at record levels (and only going up up up), it makes sense to use a cheaper alternative.
That said, biodiesel can be hard to get hold of if you cant make it yourself from vegetable oil, but veg oil can also be used in some diesel engines without modifiction but most likely you would need some kind of pre-heater to thin the veg oil out for the pump and injector(s).
If you know a friendly farmer, red diesel is good too. Not illegal for Jenny’s…
Biodiesel is a good option if you can manage it – much greener generally, and you can have tripping punters wandering around all night wondering where the chip van is parked..,.:laugh_at::laugh_at::laugh_at:
where was it supposed to go?
sorry!!! haha urm well i was talking about the “it’s up north” party so im guessing the post about that! sorry guys!!! :crazy_dru
why dont you look into gettin a gas generator. no spillage of diesel or petrol when your munted. less harm to the planet. more rigs should get on the case, me thinks.
LPG is good for static gensets but propane cylinders are heavy, harder to obtain than diesel at short notice and have more potential safety issues (in Britain you are supposed to be a CORGI registered engineer to work on the kit as well!)
