the obvious advantages of the way its done in SE Asia is you get to keep yours 😉
the real reason this was common is that intelligent, reliable but single young girls in coastal areas where usually employed coastal radio communications stations of the PTT (post, telegraph and telephone) as radio operators (they also linked ships radios to the main telephone network), and in the PTT or any Government service they were chaperoned by older women.
Even when I worked in the British Civil Service fairly recently the girls were put in separate desk groups to the boys, and if I was sent to another site to investigate computer problems I’d be lucky if I got 3 minutes to chat to any young women before some granny lady appeared and sat by us to check nothing unauthorised was happening. At the British Post Office in the 60s/70s not only was it very hard for an engineer to flirt with a telephone operator (they were on different floors of the building, had different rest areas and access was monitored) even if they did form a lasting relationship they needed official permission to get married and their parents had to approve it (not much dissimilar to Asia!)
One old salt mentioned in his blog that he always found the voices of the Chinese girls on 9VG (Singapore Radio port control) to be sexy and compared them to the Sirens (which is a bit unfair as the young women on 9VG directed you to correct areas so you wouldn’t sink your ship) – Singapore is a bit like the Essex coast where there are multiple hazards and sharp changes in water depth with a risk of fouling anchor and/or running aground)
