  • Hey dudes and dudettes.

Have just had another week of DTs. This time from the benzos. Since giving up binge drinking (I still have the odd beer) due to being an alcholic (I actually can’t drink to excess now as I wake up every time with severe muscle cramps, I have leaned a bit more heavily than I should have on benzos (primarily Etizolam).

I didn’t think it was a problem but I had a weeks A/L this week just gone and though I would let them run out (Did my last one the previous saturday to this weekend).

BIG MISTAKE. You don’t think that they have you. I was expecting insomnia due to not taking them but was not expecting DTs. They are not as sever as alcohol DTs but are still highly unpleasant nonetheless. Tachicardia, sweating, hallucinations delierium feverishness etc. The problem is that unlike alcohol, DTs from benzos can last AGES. I finally had to cave in and ordered some lower MG ones Thursday on a special delivery and am only taking minimum amounts to keep the DTs away and to get some sleep.

A whole week of Annual leave wasted (except I guess I have learned an important lesson).

If you are taking benzos nightly (bearing in mind I have rarely done them recreationally and have just used them to get to sleep) be very careful. Especially if you notice the dosage creeping up.

I am now tailing them down as is suggested as cold turkey can be dangerous (several days of hear rate topping 150bpm while resting is not healthy for your heart.

I you find you are doing these daily, especially if your dosage has slowly increased I suggest buying enough supply to tail down. Dropping the Mg that you are taking over a period of time is recommended. Also stash some up in places as If you do find that you run out it only takes about 24 hours for the onset on DTs to start.

    Be careful people.

aw too bad… thanks for the heads up

have you considered skype sex ? … don’t think it would cause dt

How long were you taking those for Chrispy and at what dosage? I’ve been on a low dose for 7 months but I make sure not to take them everyday and keep to the absolute minimum, particularly after reading up them after they were prescribed.

Quite some time now. I get terrible insomnia and they really help.

I would like to stress that I do not treat them as a recreational drug.

I recently started buying the 2mg pellets and got up to around 5 or six per night.

I have now only got 1mg and am really restricting them. Just enough to keep the DTs at bay.

The DTs are no where near as frightening as they are with alcohol but they are pretty dangerous. especially if you are not pretty fit. Arrhythmia and tachycardia are pretty dangerous, especially for long periods of time. The hallucinations were a bit more copeable with than with the alcohol.

I would be very careful. Don’t rely on them to sleep and don’t do them every day. Try 48 hour periods without and if you start to get any DT symptoms (Nausia, fatigue, headaches, fever, shaking, mild hallucinations, hyperhydrosis etc) then DO NOT STOP taking them. Make sure that you tail them down.

There’s a reason that GPs only prescribe short courses of these.

7 months is a long time and you may already be developing a dependence.

Funny how the most socially acceptable drugs are the most dangerous!

You’re right. I can feel it very midly. Even at 10 times less your dose and just 3 or 4 times a week.

How much were you drinking before would you say?

Thankfully i’ve only been able to find the 1mg variety and have tried to be sensible . I probably still take too many (also since quitting alcohol). In any case my tendency to take them before bed whilst listening to Radio Maria NL still causes angst [ a concept often discussed there], particularly that I am finally turning into my Dad (his rediscovery of Catholicism in the mid 1980s coincided with his highest consumption of benzos…)

What brought on your need to start taking them Alex?

quit taking ativan ~ a year ago and was only on a small dose so it wasn’t terrible. i can honestly say im happier without them, they do a great job of masking your problems (as does alcohol) but in the end they don’t cure anything. best of luck making it through your body compensating and figuring itself out without benzos.

you are right about benzo withdrawl lasting forever, even if it was rather mild i’d get like a freak headache out of nowhere at the most random times that had to be related to lorazepam.

Don’t let them get the better of you man. At least if they do though, you can pop the odd one at work without smelling of alcohol so it’s easier to keep them secret.

Minimum of a 2 litre bottle of strong cider every night.

    How many units is that?

No idea! lol Quite a lot over the recommended limit though. It got to the point that I would drink before bed and then wake up a few hours later with early onset dts.
