i havent read this entire thread so sorry if someone has already brought this up but…
if we address first what actually pisses people and the law off about free parties i think we could work something out.
i mean if you arrange a stompabout that cannot be heard by any locals, dedicated fist-aiders (maybe an ambulance already there if thats viable for larger events), no trash left and perhaps benefiting someone or something (like keeping the yootdem (young rabble) off the streets and getting them involved in something constructive etc (exodus-stylee)).
i dunno. there must be a way. after all we are hurting no-one and having fun.

one of these days we will crack it!…and people will look back on the days when free parties were illegal and ask “why were they ever illegal in the first place” and laugh. weve just got to respect locals and land and realise that theres nothing respectfull about doing a party too close to sleeping ears.
As soon as you legalise it you kill the vibe.People with more money to chuck at it take over, same as anything in a capitalist world. i used to run a sound system, and you either keep it underground or go commercial. anyway theres nothing to stop you hiring a venue, so in a sense it is legal. it boils down to rights. we may have our right to party, but other people have there right to sleep. hire some land away from populated centers, put up a marquee and send out invites, job done.we did all the protest stuff against the criminal justice act back in the early 90’s, didn’t get us nowhere except a police file labeling us a subversives

this (use of tolerated venues) actually happens, and indeed this summer I was at an event put on by Planet Yes/Innerfield which was set up in this manner.
I get the impression that similar events happen even in areas like Essex where raves are not usually accepted.
However in some areas even for these you are expected to get some form of license. Some Councils changed their laws back in 1989/90 as this loophole has obviously been thought of before and was previously used for the old Acid House parties..
So even for so-called private parties you would have to get a TENS license (although provided the cops don’t object they are supposedly quite easy to get)
One big problem though is that Britain is a small place and especially round here (East Anglia) most of the land is valuable and used/owned by someone.
Its really difficult finding any spare land in Suffolk and Essex as its nearly all used for farming, and NFU East have frightened away farmers from letting their land be used for raves – farmers are paranoid that drugged up fools with stray into adjoining buildings or plots and damage stuff, or if people meet with accidents the farmer may be held liable.
As this has actually happened at parties I can’t really blame the farmers for being concerned.
Also ravers are themselves quite stubborn and don’t like the ideas of defined finish times or limiting the amount of stacks/re-positioning to minimise noise disturbance.
I wholly agree with the ideas of having raves trigger off projects for the wider communities; but there have been two attempts by crews in the East (Exodus in Beds/Herts and Brains Kan in Norfolk/Suffolk/Essex) to do such things and despite good starts they have come to nothing….
Exodus destroyed itself through selfishness, paranoia and all the things it claimed not to support…. worse still, after the Govt had given them a lot of concessions like letting them buy the farm…
Although BK have made a few good records I still haven’t seen any of the “Community rigs” projects in the area yet, I have been searching hard and if they are doing anything positive here I’m willing to help them!
however the EA ravers have got themselves better known (whether they like it or not) for “raves which turn into riots” and for invading active farmland or constantly rinsing Thetford forest.
Yet I know for a fact there are loads of good people here who could do positive things on the scene, they just need real unity, a bit of guidance and a stable base to operate from…
Its time to let this start coming through, as otherwise there isn’t much justification for raves, which otherwise haven’t progressed much since 1991..

as it is it seems that people with no understanding of the free party vibe have no reason to support such an endevour.
i have nothing to suggest other that politeness and respect-why must foolish crews and revelers ruin the prospect of an easier party.

As Ogga says above, a major problem is irresponsible crews and revellers. we threw a party in a warehouse (many moons ago)it started to look grim, when nearly as many old bill turned up as were inside the warehouse.We went and spoke to them, they expressed there concerns over safety and the like and then to our suprise said it was ok as long as we packed up at 6am. sweet, we thinks, and then some prick throws a brick at them.and these sort of people allways turn up at free do’s, because its the only place there not barred from, or costs money.the type of person who’s on the ponce all night, and goes home with more money and drugs then they came with.
At the minute, due to our economy, many (allthough not all ) of our youth have the money to go to clubs and pubs ( hence the 24 hour drinking laws) the 90’s party scene was in many ways a reaction to the recession, nothing to do, nowhere to go, no prospects. I think as soon as we go into recession again it will all kick off again. Also, it looks like Gordon is going to make drinking a lot more expensive. who wants to buy a pint for 3 quid when you can get off your face on other things for much longer when you’ve got little or no money? sadly it seems that it takes hardship to bring people together, when the economy is booming there doesnt seem to be much peace love or unity, yet when we are all in the shit everyone becomes brothers
if we could sort out just one massive rave that proved that we can do it properly without polluting or scaring or owt, and we documented it properly, i recon it would be a good foundation to build off, if nothing else.
if i hadnt quit my job last week, i wouldnt have been too skint to go to the tek, and i would have distributed that leaflet i knocked up about good rave guide, and filmed its light side for the data banks. i really need to pull my finger oput.im getting frustrated by being skint and stranded. have an interveiw tomoz tho. wish me luck!
having said that, the clean up did seem not bad (at least compared to steart beach!) and the locals weren’t too pissed off. went pretty well, from what i gather.
I used to make parties in france….back in 99….the thing was back then that you had a civil-right to gather without goverment interference, but not everywhere, you had to sort out wich wing the departement goverment was…right wing often ment front national etc…and since the bosses of the gendarmes are hired by politicians in the departement level; facist cops! But they changed the laws…no you need proper authorisation….security and all kind of services on the site…ambulances, fences…and then it is not a free party anymore and will cost a bundle….crap shit fuck…there have been demonstations against the laws but…..
don’t French call the remaining legal events “sarkoteks” (as a joke) after Sarkozy (sp?) who tightened up the laws to recover the costs (using ideas the British had already used in the 90s)
