  • I’ve always been a very green fingered chap and I thought I’d turn my skill to something useful, it can’t be weed I’m afriad as I get regular visits fom my landlord.

Anyway I grow several different types of chillies, garlic (an experiment at the moment), tomatoes and cactii and was thinking of expanding my growing.

Everything is grown indoors with most under HID lighting and others (such as a few of the larger species of chillies are relying on light at the window although once a week they get supplementary light from a selection of CFL lights I have.

Anyway I have been experimenting with a couple of things and I have improved my cutting technique and I was thinking of maybe starting to sell plants over the internet.

The hotter chilli plants are notoriously difficult to start and if you were to receive a mature rooted cutting from a healthy (organic) mother it would save that hastle and also there are some I have that would make beautiful house plants.

I’m not wanting to make money out of it its more a fun thing than anything else but if it chips in for my electricity it would be wicked. I am also thinking of doing my own ranges of chilli oils, sauces and chocolates and suchlike.

Anyhow the question I actually have for you guys is…..can you think of any plants that people might want?

I have thought of salvia but other than that I can’t really think.

TBH I reckon there would be a lot of demand just for the chillis, especially with a growing interest in Asian cookery….

What do you do with the excess heat from the lamps? Would have thought with suitable arrangements of ducting/fans it could contribute to heating the house during the Scottish winter 😉

At the moment nothing as I don’t have too much space at this flat, what with it being my girlfriends house and not mine.

I used to have a 6″ rvk fan on my out take which would extract the hot air to a small metal box with holes in the top. This was the floor of my veg room, which as it used only cfl lighting stays pretty cool without plenty of extra heat. Also by adding water to the bottom of the box it kept the humidity up in the high 70’s without the need for a humidifier, which is perfect for plants in their vegative stage.

Another 6″ fan drew that air out of the top of the box and into the cavity old fireplace taking it up and out the chimney. The air was far too humid to be venting into the room.

I’m sure you can imagine my landlord was a bit suspicious to say the least but I sent her home with a goodie bag of chilli oils and chocolate, which shut her up.

I just want to promote people growing their own veg to be honest. People don’t realise how much better fresh ingredients taste. I just put a lasagne in the oven and only the beef, cheese, and the pasta was not either from my plants or a friends garden and the difference in taste between buying them from the supermarket even the organic section is amazing.

My plants are fed only the best organic feed and all but my herbs are grown in Bio-Bizz organic gold mix soil.

My herbs are in canna coco as its inert and doesn’t affect the flavour but are about to be moved into my new Aerogarden (my mums bought me one for christmas). Its an aeroponic herb garden, so I’ll be experimenting with different organic enzymes to retain the original flavours. I just cook every single night so I use a lot more herbs and ths way is far less hastle than having loads of coco all over my kitchen.

stick a few dope plants in there :weee:

or cross-breed, spicy weed, cannabis curry or mexican mmmm :crazy_dru

I can’t be arsed to be honest. Its more hastle than its worth. I did it for a bit but nowadays I’m just happy to help my mates along. I never run out of smoke, I don’t ever sell it and I don’t have to pay for it.

There seems little point in having any at my house and risk getting in the shit. I am perfectly happy to helop anyone with their growing issues although obviously it couldn’t be canna specific as thats illegal:wink:.

I was thinking of putting up a guide to starting small plants from seed and how to take cuttings and such like if anyones interested. I would be useing chilli plants but the theory is the same for most plants .

CHILLIES!!!! Before they realise how addictive they are and ban them.

I was given a fruiting chilli plant from the garden centre – so there is a growing demand there now- I think was only about £5 though and was already loaded with ripe chillis –

Other things might be to look into the latest fad (or discover a new one) for rare/unusual conservatory type plants that can be grown from seed..

Have a search for CHILTERN SEEDS online – they got masses of unusual seeds

Bonsai trees, or plants, can be grown from any plant, you just keep cutting them so that they stay small, Bonsai chilli trees spring to mind!!!

Also, what about the very unusual types such as venus fly traps, also, aloe vera, as it has medicinal properties, you can eat aloe vera, it contains 200 nutrients that are benficial to human health and well being….and the trippy type cacti plants, mescalin, etc….

    good luck……

Orchids, try growing orchids. Those and various Insect digesting plants too 😀

    Thanks for your input guys.

I do currently have sevral pitcher plants and a venus fly trap as they are very handy for dealing with any soil gnats or other flying bugs that make it into my grow room. I have various other things to deter mites and suchlike but the plants themselves take a while to grow and ages to root as cuttings so I rarely attempt it.

Aloe vera is one I want to start although I need more space. I want to do a cacti/succulents room when I have the space. Its just difficult to accomodate them in my current rooms as the humidity is too high and the temperatures are too low but if I change them then it will impare the growth on my other plants. The mescaline producing cacti take far too long to mature to be of any use to me really, if I had a greenhouse I would go for them but I don’t at the moment.

Orchids would be an interesting one to grow although I am not a huge fan of the idea of ornamental plants. I do have a few ornamental plants although they are mostly ones I have saved over the years, like the bamboo plant I found in a skip while drunk.

Tekhan the chillies I grow are rarely on sale in the shops. I have ones that vary from 300,000 scoville to about 1,000,000 (a jalapeno is about 3-8000) and are therefore more suited to people who want to grow chilli rather than a novelty item. They are far more difficult to grow, especially starting them. So gtting a healthy mature version of the plant it is a bonus. I mean to get my chocolate habernero mother I went throuugh 30 seeds. I still am not past the difficult bit as its only about 2″ tall now.

What type you after? Got a load of seeds and if I’m growing it at the moment I can sort you out a cutting or two for free. Also growing them varies so conditions depend a lot on what type your after so if you give us an idea I can knock you together a kind of starter guide.

I have grown the bog standard chillies before, but they just went in some soil and the window sill. Worked pretty well actually!

Would be interesting in growing some with a bit of heat that would be good for cooking with ( i love my spicy food ).

I would love to grow some seriously hots ones really 😉

    Cheer elretardo

Hmmm…if you don’t want to use grow lights I can sort you out with some cuts of these

    numex_twilight_closeup2.jpg

Numex twilight chilli…..they are really easy to grow and like being grown in pots. They survive wintering indoors and as you can see the chillies themselves look really cool. They are about 50,000 scoville which is about 10 times the heat of a jalapeno but with a lovely taste. They are not as hot as some common chillies like the birdseye but the heat is far more enjoyable. Its a very nice plant to look at and the taste of the chillies is really nice as well.

If your after something hotter I do have some birdseye seeds as well as some carribean habernero and I am just growing out my chocolate habernero mother at the moment so cuttings will be available from that soon. If you want hotter then dorset naga and bhut jolias are the top of the heat spectrum and I only have these in limited seed stock at the moment as I don’t like to store them arround the house or have them growing anywhere were people can come in contact with them as eating one could land you in hospital.

Wow them ones look really nice! That would be something quite nice to grow i think….

It would make more sense to have a go with one sort and see how it goes and if i am successful.

I agree with you on the really hot ones, the sort of thing mates would find really funny to piss about with until they end up hurting themselves. (someone did this a few years ago when drunk and i was not pretty)

The Federal Reserve Unit (riot squad) of the Malaysian police use extracts from the hotter chillis in their riot control water cannons!

I would expect also if handling these chillies you should wash your hands before as well as after going to the loo….
