  • Hi,

My boyfriend has had an addiction to Nurofen Plus with Codine for the last year and a half, this is not the first time either.

He went cold turkey around a week ago and is now relapsing but lying to me about it and hiding it from me, how should I approach this and what should I do?

Please please please can someone give some advise because this is ruining our relationship without him evening knowing it because I cannot what him to this any longer.

He might benefit from some time inpatient

Hi, 1st if he’s using codeine in neurophen, which contains paracetamol, that is dangerous from his liver and purely from a harm reduction angle you need to talk to him about cold water extraction. Does he know what it is and if so does he know how to do it efficiently and does he make sure to always do it. I know this is very difficult for you but opiate addiction or not, it’s this secondary danger to his liver that is the most worrying.

I myself had a painkiller problem which let to a time on methadone. Codeine being a derivative of opium, exactly as heroin is, causes the same addiction at the same levels and in the same number of people. You said your boyfriend had beaten this before, how did he achieve that? Did he have help from some specialist addictions service? They are very good and have their own doctors that can prescribe substances such as methadone to help him get through this and also offer other forms of support.

In some areas of England (and possibly the wider UK) you can call 111 from a landline which connects to trained NHS workers; to discuss any health concerns about another person (as well as yourself) which are serious but not yet of the level an Emergency Ambulance is required (although they will send one if the patient is clearly showing signs that this might be necessary).

They also have access to all the local GPs of the area and contacts for other specialist services. I am only aware of how they operate when serious medical problems are encountered by the older genrations and I am not 100% sure of how they deal with reports of addiction to OTC pharms; although the risk of a paracetamol OD and/or subsequent liver damage (which does not show up immediately) would I hope prompt them to suggest how to seek appropriate specialist treatment .

The 111 call itself will be noted on a patients health record but is kept as securely as all their other info and may even help convince the local addictions unit to give some further assistance.

111 is a nationwide serive and can be used anonymously. As GL noted it’s for health worries for people that are hesitant to dial 999 as they worry their issue is not serious enough to get an ambulance out (as is required y law in answer to all 999 calls, regardless of how obviously false). You will have to give some details to the person who answers the phone (not medically trained) such as a name (use ay name you want) and a number they can call you back on as well as some details of the problem you wish to talk about and someone (somewhat) qualified to answer your question will call you back.

If you don’t mind disclosing, where in the UK are you (if you’d rather ay in private I will add you to my friends list and you can PM me the info) and I will fins out about services in your area you can speak to in total confidence and who are experts in the field.

Yeah, the acetaminophen is more of a worry long term than the codine, please get him help or make him learn how to do a cold water extraction if he’s not gonna kick it right now.

CWE is easy enough, worth a try, any of the opiate withdrawals can be rough though.

    best of luck
