  • the majority of ppl in job centre are well entertaining. you won’t get bored waiting. i like there how they give you some sheet to write very briefly about how you’ve looked for work, but they dont care what quality of research it is. you could write; ‘checked the papers, scratched my arse a bit, checked the same paper again’ and they’d probably be ok, but instead they have some mamoth argument over why they could dream up 6 lines, and sometimes they go storming out all righteous and how harsh it is being on the breadline n that…

they changed it a bit now, you have to put 6-10 (depending on your agreement) jobs you’ve applied for.

What? 6-10 jobs that I’ve applied for. What if I haven’t found any relevant local jobs so far?

They said my list of jobs I’d applied for wasn’t realistic, but if I can’t be a Unicorn Handler, Chief tester in an MDMA lab, Boob Inspector, Test audience for porn, Crash Test Dummy or a King (of any country), then I can’t see that I’m suitable for anything, as there are no other jobs!

Then you don’t get paid. They expect you to just apply for any old shit, and forget “local” They expect you to travel up to 1-1.5 hours to a job.

you’d be expected to try a different region. You could easily find the 6-10 in and around Ipswich/Felixstowe but thats many miles South of where you are, you would definitely have to relocate as the fuel costs wouldn’t make it worthwhile.

that said maybe Cambridgeshire but you need to be a proper electronics/computer boffin to get most of them (I am not smart or qualified enough even for the junior ones, they insist on at least one degree)

And how would I be expected to pay for the travel? I have an appointment on Tuesday. Doesn’t sound like it’s going to be very promising. 🙁

They reimburse you for interview travel costs afaik, whilst working there you’ll have to pay for it out of your wage. The system isn’t very sympathetic. Your job adviser might be though and not really expect you to travel that far, however, you’ll still have to show them that you’ve applied for the required amount of jobs. TBH, the travel time might be different in your area. It’s worth looknig into (they will explain it all when you have your interview with the jsa people)

    Cheers Mr Fader Sir,

May the (dark side) of the force be with you.

if they were really as strict as they’d like you to think then there would be hardly anyone on jsa. its wrong to judge, and someone come and slap my wrist for the judgements i make, but when you go to your jsa appointment you’ll notice there is a certain calibre of person there who seems to be passing through the ‘requirements.’ but how?

consider that part of the clause of jsa is that you have to show that you’re willing to travel far and are willing to take any job, and if you find a job you have to take it. but the bump in the road for them (in terms of getting you off benefits) is that an employer has to accept you and they (jobcentre) know that the majority of people on jsa are (in their present state) unemployable… and so the whole process becomes farcical and the unemployable/[people that don’t want to work] learn what to do (and what they don’t need to do) to get their benefit… or they dont learn and continuously throw their toys out the pram at jsa appointments

i think (im not sure) that the jobcentre aren’t allowed to pester employers about whether or not said phone calls/ interviews/ emails took place so there is no way for them to check if someone on jsa has done the things she/he has listed. also there are other difficulties for them. one is that they are obliged to host all job adverts from agencies, and the agencies are aware of this and so list jobs that are in some way skewed and have unfavourable terms, which if the system had any weight behind it would force people to work a lousy job, but because there is none, it only serves to further blunt the process

also, if you’re looking for work, then you’ll probably have plenty to list. an entry for the 6 (or 6-10 as daft says) things you’ve done to find work can be something small like ‘spoke to employer,’ or ‘looked on xy jobsite for vacancies’

It was 6 last time I was on jsa, then this time they have said 10 (per fortnight).

you just put that you looked and didn’t find any relevant jobs

Well, I have done some stuff. I’m back on the jobs noticeboard for B&Q (where I used to work) but King’s Lynn (which is the only branch within a reasonable distance of me aren’t advertising for staff), I have approached Tesco In Hunstanton but they are over-staffed. Other than that can I just say that I have checked the jobs pages etc?

I might sign up for a few agencies in Lynn if there are any there.

Then they sanction you, ie don’t give you any money. If in a year a Tribunal finds they acted unlawfully (and they will) then you get sanctioned benefits back (without interest).

My local job centre threatening to sanction me to apply for 20-30 jobs per fortnight. Or rather, to sign a Job Seekers Agreement that I will hunt for 20-30 jobs per fortnight (which means they can sanction me legally if I don’t).

The fact that there aren’t 20-30 vacancies per fornight to apply for doesn’t phase them – they want me to list “job hunting activities.”

I guess “Filling out this fucking stupid checklist for beauracratic twats” might be one of the steps, but I’m lumbered for the other 19.

Max – MAX – applications I have been able to make in a fortnight is 14. Over 6 months.

That’s not fucking good enough for them. The controlling party (Tories) want as many people depressed, suicidal, and dead as possible. They haven’t changed, they can’t, they always side with the oppressors.

they don’t “pester” them as such, any more than websites or facebook “pester” people by gathering data.

The Job Centre offer either free or discounted advertising space to employers, in return for these employers giving feedback about the candidates (whether or not they turn up, their attitude etc). It is certainly cheaper to do that than advertise in the local press (although even those job ads aren’t that expensive these days).

TBH all the jobs in this region are mostly in Suffolk or Cambs anyway.
