    can’t say neigh to that…

seriously though this hardly surprises me. When the Dutch are selling what appears to be a decent quality riding horse for as little as €500, I’m sure a knackered one normally intended for pet food would be far cheaper across the Eurozone, which is in long term economic depression.

I wouldn’t/don’t have a problem with eating horse/dog/human whatever but I’d want to know. If you’re going to sell me horse meat tell me and I won’t have an issue but don’t conceal it in other food products. Also I’d only want to be eating wild or farm reared meat i.e. not someone’s pet dog that’s been stolen.

I think which part of the anatomy you are eating is far more important that which animal it comes from

Remember this has only be highlighted because of false advertising, the boxes said ‘Beef Burgers’, boxes that simply say ‘Burgers’, pies that say ‘Meat’ etc are allowed to contain horse and mechanically recovered meat from various animals carcases mixed together

Meh, I eat McDonald’s chicken nuggets so which part isn’t really an issue to me long as it tastes good. Don’t like liver though, it’s the consistency and texture I dislike more than flavour. Also I avoid kidney as the concept of consuming the piss organ doesn’t appeal to me.

    mechanically recovered meat… mmmm

Not everyone likes burgers, its horses for courses.

those rules got changed in 2000/2001, mechanically reclaimed meat has to be separately declared. but consumers are entitled to at least know what species they are eating (or what proportions of combined species). (I used to work for Defra and had to know these things and a lot of other farming/country stuff). It wouldn’t have been illegal to sell them anywhere in the Eurozone had they been clearly marked “Beef and Horse burger” and there are many folk in mainland Europe who would have still bought them!

Despite recent news, Tesco have released a statement claiming that the sales of their burgers remain stable.

Not my specialist subject so quite likely I am out of date on the rules

News said the Horse is not the real problem, it’s still false advertising, but apparently the burgers also contained some pork and some religious peeps cant eat pork…………… so watch out for suicide bombers in the freezer isle lol

Seriously though, if you got a receipt for these burgers Im sure their will soon be a market for them, all the Muslims and 7th day Adventists etc will want to buy burger receipts so they can prove purchases and sue supermarkets

    And they’re off! (The shelves)

horsemeat ball in breadcrumbs. regularly served up at cafés in the Netherlands.

    Bitterballen 20% – Mora

in Belgium there are whole restaurants devoted to horsemeat.

I bought some horsemeat from a supermarket when I was in Italy a couple of years ago. It was pretty tasty actually, although quite tough (I guess it came from animals that had reached the end of their working lives, rather than animals raised for meat).

It’s a bit surprising to see it in this country, but what’s more worrying is it seems that Tesco have got some issues with their supply chain and can’t account for all the meat that’s in their products – particularly as it’s more common for horsemeat to end up in petfood (along with other animals products ‘unfit for human consumption’, which begs the question what the fuck else is in the burgers?).
