  • “Rock Mi” from the Alpenrebellen (the video I posted earlier) is in the Austrian/Bavarian dialect which is widely misheard even by native German speakers (some even end up speaking English when they go to these areas as they cannot understand the locals).

it is about traditional dancing with the Mädel around the maypole, and points out (quite accurately in North European nations) that the lasses make the first move (in the bit where the dude is singing to a cow!).

    The refrain is:

Schau mir in die Augen, Kleine,
du bist a ganz a Feine
    rock mi heut Nåcht.
Drah di um, drah di um,
    bis der Tanzbodn kråcht.

EN : look in my eyes darling (literally “little one”)
    you are wholly the finest
    rock me tonight
    dance around, dance around
    until the dance floor cracks.

This is why Germanic languages are not viewed as “romantic” (although love songs are more common in German than Dutch) – including the contradiction of using the term Kleine for a lass who is then described as strong enough to put holes in what is solid ground :laugh_at: -although until the influence from USA/UK culture and Angst over body image the Germanic concept of female beauty originally preferred fuller figured women anyway.

on some sites that are more geared to posting lyrics of tracks in Hochdeutsch (standard German) the last bit sometimes gets is wrongly written as

“du bist a Gans von Kranz”

    which would be in English

You are the Goose of the Maypole-circle”

although that might even stil work as a chat up line in the rural areas; bear in mind though this was the only sort of flirting approved by the Catholic Church (and was later banned by Protestants) and anything that happened susbequently was intended to lead to proper marriage – and you would be expected to follow the example of nature

Although this multicultural goose family is from the Phillipines where they were photographed by Dutch nuns who have a convent there…
