  • Hi again all,

I am still plowing away looking for work but I have a question (again).

I have applied for several jobs this week, one of which is for a room design consultant (for their Cambridge office). The office phoned me within 20 minutes of making my application and want me to go for an interview tomorrow (Thursday) in Barnet (I live in Cambridge).

Now, I know very little about the role itself (other than what my general duties would be) but have no information about pay, if there is an hourly rate and if so what it is or whether it is purely commission based.

Not only that, I have checked up on the company and their current cash assets are £1,854 and they seem to have a net worth of £-36,851 which concerns me a little. There also seem to be several complaints logged against them (at their Barnet branch).

Now this would be around 114 mile round trip for me. I’m on £71.10 per week and have just had to MOT my car. I’m really reluctant to go to this interview but if I don’t, could there be repercussions?

I’m not exactly sure what to do.

I have emailed the main office back and told them that I will be unable to attend as my car is being fixed but that I could make it to the Cambridge branch if possible. Waiting for a reply.

Just don’t want to get sanctioned for not going to an interview that has been offered.

I know how hard dealing with the beaurocratic bastards is, when I was on JSA it was the most demoralizing, dehumanizing and humiliating time of my life. I know I shouldn’t say this but frain mental health issues. That way you will get ESA, and total free time to properly find a job right for you. I’m on ESA and DLA, but I am actually certified mental.

I’d check the email has been received (Govt ones often go to group email boxes and/or can get knocked back / accidentally deleted in a variety of ways) but that seems like a totally reasonable explanation and if they really wanted to they have the facility to call or email VOSA directly who would confirm there was a recent MOT on your car. It is also well known and proveable in East Anglia that it now costs more to travel to London by train at peak times than to drive there.

Also TBH this company sounds suspect, where I work we are 100% honest about what the job entails, the only thing not disclosed over the phone are salary details as it stops competitors posing as applicants to get info about the company.

Also unless you are applying for interviews via the giro office and there is an arrangement to follow up with the company to check candidates attendance or quality of interview I’m not sure if DWP check up that closely, as where I work we put ads in the job centre but very rarely if ever are asked for feedback about whether folk turned up (TBH comparatively few people apply for them anyway as they require professional skills in healthcare and a reasonably clean CRB)

I had a missed call from what I assume to be the Cambridge office guy today (I was away from my phone and he left a message). I’ll call him back tomorrow, I suppose I should go and see him but it will be a reverse interview (ie, he will have to convince ME that I want the job).

Jobseekers only know that I have applied (as I put it on my activity history on Universal Jobmatch) but they don’t know that I have been contacted.

It’s very simple if you are concerned about a job offer being valid.

Insist on a written contract stating the terms of employment.

No contract = no job offer (ALTHOUGH it might be tempting to take it just to case their office nick all their office equipment… er… I mean sustainably redistribute their wealth to the poorest and most in need.
