  • Even in the sticks round here its flat so noise travels far (hence why the free parties here got locked off very quickly) – And here you cannot avoid people looking into each others business (it is in the culture of the region). especially if you go into a village random strangers especially older people will often strike up conversation with you – I’m a Londoner by birth so this freaked me out at first. there’s nothing sinister or threatening about it but it is also a way of monitoring and judging who is around and what they are up to.

There are also cops patrolling 24/7 (there are good reasons for this to be fair ranging from road layouts to recent incidents the areas relative proximity to London) so anything “not normal” (such as a crashed bike in the gutter) is noticed and reported.

Its not unlike some aspects of Dutch culture (consider where the TV show “Big Brother” originated from!) which is hardly surprising given East Anglia is only across the water.

Uh… strangers, being strange, are by their very nature, random?

Or statistically is it impossible to get a non-random stranger… Especially if you are in an area new to you (cause then, YOU are the stranger and the locals are checking out your weirdness in terms of threat factor to the local customs).

I have no problems with cops patrolling 24/7, it’s when they stop and take an interest I have a problem. Although generally speaking I just like wasting their time as every second they are spending on me, they’re not spending it on somebody else.

i live like 5 minutes away from belvoir castle, the whole area is basically a giant bowl and i live on one of the giant hills over looking the bowl. we dont get alot of fed activity, normally it might be the local parish and the police doing a speed trap or someone hasnt picked up their dog shit so the whole village goes on a mad one sticking signs everywhere 😛 the people in the village under the age of bout 45 are all townies and just lock themselves indoors and its slowly killed off the happy village vibe where everyone knows everyone. it used to be a proper community when i was little, then moved back because i had those happy memories and either the people i knew had died or moved out the village -_-

Well, that’s very sad. Have you thought about joining or starting up some community activities like shooting foxes, tramp baiting and oik bashing? Those are guesses over what the locals enjoy, I could be very wrong on their idea of a good night out.
