Vouchers could be handed out to try to persuade addicts to stay off drugs or to take part in health-screening for infectious diseases.

The technique has proved effective in the United States and Canada, NICE said in a document outlining its draft guidelines to health chiefs.

    when can we have them!:groucho:

there doing this at my local drug service; if you take a swab drug test you get a £2 boots voucher. Good for a sarnie i suppose.

not sure how well it would work with hardended addicts but TBH some of them may need a residential rehab initially – I think it could work for problem users who pretty much want to change or those who have overdone party drugs and are trying to get their lives back on track.

actually if its for places like boots etc doesn’t seem too bad an idea…. could be good for people with families as stuff like nappies/baby things are proper expensive..

and in somewhere like Boots you are bombarded with lots of info about healthy lifestyles… and its an incentive not to get banned from town for shoplifting…

    worth a try anyway

I think its just going to add to the worsening ‘you owe me a living’ culture.

People getting paid to get clean? bizarre….

I suppose its cheaper than mopping up after the shoplifting/mugging has happened….

Its also more of an incentive to addicts to produce clean samples so the cdt’s can stay open. Addicts either dont, or they cant be bothered/oter reason why the dont do urine tests.

At the end of the day CDT’s are only funded on statistics, how many people remain in the service/get clean etc….

We have been giving either money or vouchers to local addicts for completing either questionaires or spit samples etc to test the drug community for HIV/AIDS and Hep C or to give information on harm minimisation. Anti-bodies can be found in saliva and so is a cheap way of testing, and the user gets cash and or vouchers. Its prooved useful.

We had the most amount of people come to our Harm Minimisiation workshops in September last year as part of the Drugs and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT). We discussed with nearly 60 participants. (more than London I haste to add) services in the West Of Berks area. Each user was paid £20 and given lunch as part of a 4 hour talk.

OK, they probebly came to the workshop to get their £20 and go and score afterwards, but if we got our point accross to drug users then we have done our job and the user can gain by using drugs safer.
