  • hi everybody, my name is Charles-Oliver Simard and I’m new to this forum. In fact this will be my first ever post here and I decided to share a very personnal project with you guys, which is the first part of a drug documentary I filmed last summer un Vancouver.

I need to warn you however that it can be shocking, even disgusting to some, but I think pretty much everybody here is mature enough to handle the truth. Now just so you know what led me to do this, I lived in probably the worst neighborhood in north america for more than 2 months last summer (vancouver downtown eastside, right on main and hastings at the regent hotel), working in construction, and it turned out I was so overwhelmed by all the poverty, drugs, and misery out there that I had to capture that intensity on film in order to better understand it and to show the rest of my family and friends what I went through.

So long story short, these deep thoughts got me into trying to grasp a real junkie’s point of view on the subject, and after filming an hour long interview with an heroin addict named Bruce, I realised that I was holding some really powerfull material and I thought it would be a good idea to share it with as many people as possible. My goal doing this is to help people understand the human nature behind all types of addiction so they can stop judging, categorizing and marginalizing addicts and open up their minds a bit.

This being said, I’ll let you watch it and dont be shy to comment, especially for this one, because I think drugs are a major issue in today’s world, and even if it’s hard to adress it, discussing it is a big part of the steps towards understanding and eventually finding solutions.

enough talking, there it is: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=NfzMJM6c254

I have been reading a lot of reports into drug addiction and they seem to base a lot of their studies in Vancouver, you have a safe injecting place over there don’t you?

I will have a gander at your video in a bit..

no citric, no filter? weird way to inject. although he has great veins for someone who claims to have been doing it for 23 years

Thank you snowsk8steez. I think your first post is a really important contribution, and in return, I give you my fist post to this forum.

Watching your film, and also reading the posts at http://www.partyvibe.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=21553 make me feel quite emotional.

I have never taken H. Nor have I ever entertained any curiosity about it. But in my 10+ years of taking recreational drugs I have lost to it 2 people whose closeness to me waxed and waned (as they never stayed in one place, emotionally or geographically for long) but both of which I grew to know, understand and love and who very much became part of my extended family. This was only possible, because I never held any prejudice towards the heroin – if I had, I would only have known the heroin and not the person underneath. The intelligent, kind, considerate, self-conscious, loving people that they were. The part of your film where Bruce talks about how intelligent most users are I found particularly poignant.

I come across many people in my life who are ignorant to the underlying causes of serious drug addictions, ignorant to the underlying causes of homelessness and ignorant to the ways in which political and social systems in this country keep addicts addicted and keep homeless people homeless. And despite their ignorance, despite perhaps their personal understanding and experiences of how other forms of addiction can affect lives, they hold very deep-set prejudices towards the people involved in these social experiences.

I know perhaps this is liberal ideology, but I think one of the most important things that could happen in today’s society would be for the general public to reach a point of understanding that anyone can find themselves using. Anyone can find themselves destitute, removed from their social networks and without a home. That there is always a story behind these resultant symptoms. That these things happen to people who are intelligent, are capable, are normal, every-day people. And that they can be over-come.

And so, I find your film very relevant to my life. Very relevant to what I believe. And I hope that many people view it and take something from it that is relevant to them and their lives.

As General Lighting posts here, [URL=”http://http://www.partyvibe.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=767″%5Dhttp://www.partyvibe.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=767%5B/URL%5D, we cannot leave it down to centralised governments to solve these problems for us. I think these responsibilities come down each and every one of us, and that all it takes for us to bear this responsibility is to take the time to understand – from this point on, acting to help resolve becomes relatively easy.

However, and please don’t take this as a criticism, I would say that I hope that not too many young people watch this film. I think for the message to hit home, the viewer does need to be able to contextualise the content in a way that only mature/experienced minds can. Otherwise there is maybe a danger of desensitisation. Perhaps in later films, you could also illustrate the sacrifices in life-style your subject has had to make and what he/she has to go through each and every day which I think can be equally shocking, if not more so.

    Keep up the good work.

    peace and love x

I was gonna write the same

    interesting piece,

just my thoughts – I found the echoing of the speach rather irritating though – as I found it hard to follow what he was saying.
And It would be nice to hear more about him as a person rather than just see the graphic cooking up and pinning though – a bit of background, what his everyday situation is, how his addiction impacts his life / relationships etc to get a more rounded view of him. … as if your trying to get people to see ‘past’ the addict and the real person I think that would help.

Thanks for sharing your work – more would be welocme

    and welcome to PV :bounce_fl

i haven’t watched it yet but will do in the next day or so but it looked very interesting from your description of it .. and by other peoples as well .. :group_hug

obviosly not intelligant enough to say NO! JUST SAY NO MAN!!!!!!! 😉 no i know i cannot possibly understand. it was interesting though. 😉

The thing with addiction is that addicts dont know why they do it either(apart from getting their fix of course). The long term devastation doesnt seem to deter them .All they want is that momentary escape from reality which they cannot rationalise as they know the comedown and returning to reality is inevitable.I have never taken smack but I had a very bad cocaine addiction once.I lost everything ,my money,my girl ,the respect of my friends etc, however I still had the desire to use.I even attempted suicide a couple of times when on a nasy comedown and promised myself I would never use again. That resolution lasted about a week!Im clean now and enjoying life and still get angry at myself for not realising earlier what I was doing to myself.
