  • Two British telecoms companies (Cable and Wireless and Thus) have decided to celebrate their merger with this “space age” leaflet..

(ask your older siblings/parents if you don’t get the joke )

i dont get the joke, can you be my adopted dad and explain it to me please gl?

i’m ace i only start the occasional fire

    im either young…or uneducated. :hopeless:

    I dont get it either….

I’m sticking with the fact I’m too young to understand :laugh_at:

    cheers Pop’s :laugh_at:

I still remember seeing this happen on TV in high school, they put it on two of those old tellies for several science classes to watch (I would have been 14 then).

Cable and Wireless is full of old grey farts anyway (it only deals with corporate customers, govt and the feds and ceased all its small business customers as they “weren’t worth the money”)

in the 90s, Thus took over what was formerly a decent ISP (Demon) what stood up for free speech (although was starting to have shit customer service and reliability)

it then turned it into a more corporate-based ISP – and now they are going to be part of a big badly managed UK corporate so perhaps this marketing “initiative” isn’t too far off the mark for the whole fucking internet….

I would have been 10 and I think I remember something about it having wathced the youtube link

however I am rather shit when it comes to technology – unfortunatley – wish I’d have got more into it as a school kid but our school only had around 4 (distinctley beige) bbcb (?) computers
and only the real techy kids got any help

(I did have an amsrad 64 (?) and then a toshiba (which shortly went out of production so was stuck with zelda) and I used to try and program in games but also remember the words ‘syntax error’ appearing alot :laugh_at:)

they made a really big show about it as there was a science teacher on board – cue (after the shuttle blew up in front of everyones eyes) about 60 kids all looking fairly shocked – well most of them, although me and my mates didn’t openly laugh (or we would have got trouble/detention etc) we were cynical about the whole thing right from the start (yes, I had a cynical view of the world back then and is persists to this day…)

as for computers, my high school was well equipped and had about 16 of those BBC B’s, all on a network. In 1987 I put a trojan onto that network so a group of us could send messages to each other and take over other peoples computers :laugh_at:

    you cyical? :laugh_at:

After Mr Tank explained what a trojan is :hopeless: (I only heard of the condoms) I understand,

our mate (a firwall security consultant for an American company with a 57K firewall thingy in his living room that people are constantly trying to hack it)
put a floppy disc in one computer at his school, having taken out the inside bit and covered it in nail varnish, it then blew up when the next person turned it on

would have been a mixture of nail varnish and the insides of red matches (friction from drive head = kaboom).

Some Yanks used this tactic to sabotage their rivals uni work during the 90s, or just get back at the school (better than the more recent practice of shooting up the place I suppose)

However, I’m slightly older and there was only one computer with a 3.5″ disk drive at that time they got in 1989 (it would have been harder to make this tactic work with 5.25″ disks) and the last thing we wanted to do was blow it up as it had a useful scanner and colour printer otherwise hard to at in those days – this was just perfect for making fake ID’s :laugh_at:

    indeed 😉
I found a few of my fake I.D’s recently and my lord they are shit shit shit!!!
god knows how they worked or why they even bothered to look at em and let us in – with what they can do now they are certainly embarrassing
