Twenty children are being admitted to hospital every day with alcohol-related illness, it has been revealed.
They are diagnosed with blood poisoning and behavioural problems caused by binge boozing.
NHS Figures show the number of youngsters admitted to hospital with alcohol-related conditions has risen by more than 20% in the last five years.
In Cheshire and Merseyside alone, more than 10 under-18s per week are admitted because of drink abuse.
Ian Forster, of the North West Ambulance Service, said: "It's not unusual for a child to have drunk a litre of vodka - that would have me on my back for three or four weeks.
"Resources are quite sparse anyway, so to be dragged from pillar to post all over the city for underage drinking, which is avoidable, is keeping us from the patients that we're trained to treat."
In the last five years, the number of under-18s being admitted to hospital with alcohol-related conditions has risen from 6,288 in 2000/1 to 7,579 in 2004/5.
Experts say the Government's harm reduction strategy, which aims to address the problem of alcohol abuse in society, is not working.
Professor Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians, said: "I think the fact that we're seeing things getting worse, rather than better, two years after a harm reduction strategy, means we need to revisit this very urgently.
"What we cannot afford to do is wait the 40 years that it took with smoking."
A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "Tackling binge drinking is a priority. Although levels of binge drinking are no longer rising, there is no room for complacency."

The Autobots Profile
Tom and Jez, collectively known as nu-skool breaks DJ’s/Producers ‘The AutØbØts’, have established themselves on a worldwide stage, with their instantly recognizable blend of tearing basslines and funky breaks.
Their label ‘Broke Recordings’ won the coveted ‘Breakthru Label’ award at this years ‘Breakspoll’ award ceremony @ Fabric in London, whilst Broke’s sister label ‘Brock Out’ currently offers a platform for emerging artists to nurture their talents in a professional environment.
There's been a slight change in Management at the label, with Mark (Deep Impact) having left the managerial side, in order to concentrate on other work commitments.
However, we look forward to more quality Broke material from him, sometime next year and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavours.
‘Broke’ recordings are consistently found in the record bags and boxes of a wide range of globally recognized artists such as The Plump Djs, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors, and ourselves as well as thousands of other professional DJ’s and enthusiasts alike.
But it was a nice surprise to hear Fat Boy Slim A.K.A Norman Cook close his set at Global, in front of a 30,000 strong crowd, with ‘Burn’ (The AutØbØts recent collaboration with HB’s Screwface, Featuring MC Navigator on vocals).
The labels have also featured on dozens of Radio stations worldwide, including regular plays on BBC Radio1 (Zane Lowe, Annie Nightingale, etc.) as well as countless plays on the many online internet radio stations.
In terms of gigs, The AutØbØts have racked up hundreds over the last 4 years, many in their homeland UK, at clubs and events such as Eargasm @ Fabric, Breakspoll, Raindance, Spectrum, Beatworx, and many others, not forgetting their residency @ Fuse in Manchester.
They also made appearances at Reading and Guildford festivals in 2003, and Glastonbury in 2004 as well as V Festival and The Glade in 2005.
Abroad, the ‘bØts have played all over the world incorporating countries such as Japan, Russia, Czech Republic, Spain (over 30 times, including performing to 10,000 people at the Esparrago festival), Canada and 10 tours of the USA, including 4 appearances @ Winter Music Conference, in Miami.
These regular international excursions have helped to extended The AutØbØts global appeal and the duo is subsequently attracting interest from all quarters.
Aside from the Autobots, Tom also moonlights as Bez's (Happy Mondays) DJ partner, and regularly gigs worldwide with the freaky dancer.

Man ordered to remove solar panels
this is just down the road from me. crazy!!
David Forster has been ordered by Broadland District Council to take down solar panels from the Grade II listed building in Cawston.
A council is forcing an environmentalist to remove the solar panels from his house just weeks after local government pledged to promote the development of eco-friendly buildings.
David Forster, from Oulton Broad, installed the solar cells on the roof of the water tower he was converting back in 2005.
And because they were not visible from the road and did not alter the structure of the distinctive 10-sided Grade II listed building in Cawston, near Aylsham, he did not inform the council.
But when the documentary charting his mission of transforming the disused tower into a family home aired on Channel 5, council members saw what he had done.
Mr Forster said: "It genuinely didn't occur to me that I would need permission for the solar panels.
"It makes no difference to the view, they can only be seen from the air.
"Even then I've had all this information from them about going green, and they've been running these campaigns about conserving energy, so why object to this?"
As soon as he received the letter from Broadland District Council he appealed the decision, which has now been rejected.
And when an inspector visited the site to assess the situation, he did so without Mr Forster's knowledge.
Mr Forster said: "I understand the council's position. They are trying to protect a building.
"But I'm not destroying or ruining it I'm trying to balance history with the future.
"I think it's important to try and do our own little bit to help, which is proving difficult if the council is going to stand in our way."
He has worked out that by removing the £5,000 solar panels he will now emit almost three-quarters of a tonne of carbon into the atmosphere a year.
Earlier this month, council leaders agreed to work on a joint plan to consider how they could promote energy management and mobility and the development of eco-friendly buildings after they came under fire for failing to act more quickly on the issue.
And North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, who has solar panels himself, has previously accused councils of "an unacceptable level of complacency" when it comes to energy saving.
A council spokesman said: "Broadland District Council was, in this instance, following Government guidelines and has refused permission because of the adverse impact on the listed building.
"We actively encourage Broadland residents to think about their energy use, but planning permission may be required for such equipment and we would therefore advise anyone considering installing such technology to contact the council's planning service before committing themselves."
Mr Forster said: "When are they going to start doing something? When water is lapping around our feet?"

Catholic marchers turn on Glastonbury pagans
· Police arrest youth on suspicion of harassment
· Priest distances church from intimidation
Thair Shaikh
Saturday November 4, 2006
The Guardian
In scenes reminiscent of medieval witchhunts, Catholic pilgrims in Glastonbury have attacked pagans and threatened to "cleanse" them from the town.
Local pagans were pelted with salt and branded witches who "would burn in hell" during a procession organised by Youth 2000, a conservative Catholic lay group. The Magick Box, a pagan shop on the route of the march, was also singled out and attacked.
Maya Pinder, the owner of the shop, said: "We've had to hear comments such as 'burn the witches', we've had salt thrown in our faces and at our shop, people were openly saying they were 'cleansing Glastonbury of paganism'.
"It was as if we had returned to the dark ages. This is hugely damaging to Glastonbury ... it is hard enough to trade in Glastonbury as it is, if you were to take away the pagan element it would be a dead town." The Somerset town is known for having a large population of resident and visiting pagans.
The archdruid of Glastonbury, Dreow Bennett, said: "To call the behaviour of some of their members medieval would be an understatement. I personally witnessed the owner of of the Magick Box being confronted by one of their associates and being referred to as a bloody bitch and being told 'you will burn in hell'."
Father Kevin Knox-Lecky of St Mary's church said that after meeting representatives of the pagan community he had decided not to invite Youth 2000 to the town again.
He said: "A family appeared who we don't know, who were very destructive not only in the town and to the pagan community, but were also swearing at our parishioners as well."
He said the majority of Catholics taking part in the procession had been well-behaved and respectful of the pagans.
The retreat was organised last week to mark the 467th anniversary of the beheading of the last abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Richard Whiting, and fellow martyrs.
Youth 2000 describes itself as "an independent, international initiative that helps young adults aged 16-35 plug back into God at the heart of the Roman Catholic Church".
It was set up 10 years ago by a disenchanted Catholic barrister who wanted a return to the traditional teachings of the church for young people.
Charlie Conner, the managing director of Youth 2000, said: "There were several incidents that happened that same weekend that were linked to people who had come to Glastonbury for the retreat. This was in direct contravention of the general spirit of Youth 2000 and its express instructions. The young man who was fined was not in fact registered on the retreat, although he did attempt to attend it.
"Youth 2000 does not condone or encourage this kind of behaviour from anyone. We fully agree that differences on matters of faith cannot and should not be resolved by any kind of harassment."
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset police confirmed a youth had been arrested at Magick Box on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress.
Two women were also given cautions and warned about their future conduct.

Compulsory cold turkey? Nearly 200 prisoners and former inmates forced to stop taking drugs by going "cold turkey" are to receive payments. The unspecified settlement followed claims the practice amounted to assault and a breach of human rights.
The claimants had been using heroin and other opiates and were understood to have been receiving alternative treatment before going to prison.
