Vigilance call on illegal raves Vigilance call on illegal raves
Farmers in Wales are on the lookout this weekend for early warning signs of illegal raves planned for their land.
The August bank holiday is seen as one of the most likely dates.
Authorities in Pembrokeshire admit they were not properly prepared when more than 500 people overran farm land at Marloes during the weekend in 2003.
Police, council officers and land owners now hold contingency planning meetings and at least one large scale rave has been thwarted this summer.
Pembrokeshire Council's pollution control and licensing manager Gareth Watts said an illegal event had been planned at Barafundle Bay on the last weekend of July.
He said thanks to early "credible information," routes to the award-winning beach were monitored and people turned away.
Mr Watts said mobile phones and text messaging made it easier for organisers to spread the word and numbers attending could quickly grow.
He said as well as noise and rubbish there were many safety issues.
"Lessons learned"
Throughout this week planners have been contacting farmers and landowners, passing on advice and asking them to be vigilant.
"We are very much aware that this weekend is the time when people might come down to the county and spoil it for the rest," added Mr Watts.
On August bank holiday 2003, more than 500 people spent the weekend on land belonging to farmer Owen Morgan at Marloes.
He said it was highly organised with a huge sound system and stage, but he was left "powerless" to move them on.
The police and council came in for criticism at the time for not stopping the event, but Mr Watts said lessons had been learned...

Two police officers injured breaking up Stroud rave Two police officers were injured while helping to break up a rowdy rave party in the Cotswolds.
More than 30 police officers were called out to the Avocet Business Park in Dudbridge, Stroud, in the early hours of Saturday, following complaints.
Several people were arrested for public order offences and the rest of the party-goers were dispersed. Despite the numbers involved in the disorder, there were no serious injuries or assaults, police said.

Gang violence erupts as rave craze returns
With the rebirth of dance culture, hard drugs are openly for sale on the streets of Ibiza. Tonight, 40,000 ecstasy tablets will be bought on the island. Now the brutality that underpins the trade is boiling over, and the party paradise is turning into a nightmare world of contract killings

She was gone for five minutes. Scoring drugs on the waterfront of San Antonio rarely takes long. Rachel, 23, from Leeds, returned clutching three film-wrapped balls of cocaine and half-a-dozen ecstasy tablets. Her group sidled off to the lavatories of a beach bar in pairs. Like thousands of others, they had come to Ibiza to take drugs and dance all night in one of the many superclubs, then sleep off their hangovers on the beach during the day. And they were not disappointed: their holiday destination is the epicentre of the biggest captive market for cocaine and ecstasy dealers in the world.
Away from the laughter of the women from West Yorkshire, a darker story emerges. It involves a spate of contract killings, some of Britain's most wanted criminals and an illegal trade that links San Antonio to drug syndicates in most major UK cities.
More murders are expected to follow as drugs barons battle for supremacy. The recent shooting of two innocent holidaymakers caught in the crossfire of a gunfight among British gangs just yards from where Rachel bought her night's stash is evidence of escalating tension among the British criminals.
First reports that Ibiza's club scene was experiencing its busiest season of the last few years reached suppliers acting for the leading drug syndicates last month. The response was immediate. Scores of dealers are thought to have been sent from the Costa del Sol and Britain to Ibiza. Gangs from Liverpool, Manchester, London and Birmingham are all thought to be operating in the port town, according to the latest intelligence from Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and Interpol...
