Vow to pull down camping barn
STEPHEN PULLINGER
22 August 2006 07:45
It was opened with the personal blessing of Prince Charles as a pioneering venture in green tourism on the Broads.
But after a harrowing Saturday night when his idyllic camping barn was taken over for an illegal rave, with 1,000 party goers descending on the quiet village of Halvergate, near Yarmouth, farmer Robert More has vowed to demolish it to prevent any re-occurrence.
At the event's height, music levels were so loud that a thumping beat resounded across the marshes to Acle and South Walsham as well as Halvergate.
Road blocks set up by police failed to stem the arrival of revellers and in one incident, Sgt James Heath was slightly injured in a collision involving a vehicle that ended up in a ditch.
Father-of-two Mr More, whose family has farmed Manor Farm for 300 years, believed he had hired out the barn, normally used by ramblers and groups such as cubs, for a small birthday party.
Still clearing up mess yesterday ranging from broken bottles and beer cans to human excrement, Mr More, 52, found himself criticised by a police chief, and was left even more mortified in his position as chairman of the parish council.
He said: “Villagers are looking for someone to blame. I did not organise the party but I have huge sympathy for those affected.
“The effect of what amounts to a huge invasion of our privacy and property by a badly-behaved mob has been devastating.”
Mr More had thought about 20 young people would be attending and only realised what was happening when a local police officer rang him to say that Suffolk Police had received reports of a rave being organised.
He said the party organiser from South Norfolk - who joined police at the barricades - claimed his private event had somehow been taken over, and he did not know the vast majority of those turning up.
Mr More said: “The party goers, in their teens and early 20s, parked back in the village and walked to the site. It started en masse at about 8.30pm and police had no choice but to let it take its course.”
He said he could not sleep at all for worrying about drunken youngsters wandering around the village causing vandalism.
“When I went to the barn around lunchtime on Sunday there were still several hundred there, a lot of them drunk.
“They had left a large amount of cans, broken bottles and bottle tops, all stuff that could kill the cattle and sheep grazing outside,” he said.
A trail of litter extended from the Marsh Road site into Halvergate, and crops had been damaged and driven through.
Mr More, who has spent thousands of pounds on the barn's upkeep, and battled vandalism by local youngsters, said he had viewed it as a service for the community rather than a business.
Prince Charles had sent his personal good wishes when it had been opened in 1990, and up to 500 people had enjoyed staying there each year.
The only previous problems had come with a noisy event about a month ago, and ironically, Mr More said he had already decided against taking similar party bookings after this one.
Supt Jim Smerdon warned other landowners to beware of allowing their premises to be used for what appeared to be small, private parties.
It was necessary to pay heed to regulations regarding fire, licensing and environmental health.
Mr More has pledged to organise a public meeting in Halvergate to discuss the issues and try to prevent any further such illegal parties.
In response to raves all over the county, including regular events in Thetford Forest, police have set up a partnership with councils and such agencies as the Forestry Commission to try to curb them.

Girl, 18, brains of drug ring
By R.S.N. MURALI
KUALA TERENGGANU: An 18-year-old girl and two men have been arrested for having in their possession more than 6,200 Ecstasy pills with a street value of about RM240,000.
The teenager, said to be the “brains” behind a drug distribution racket, and her accomplices were nabbed in separate raids in Ajil and Kuala Besut last week.
The girl was picked up at a house in Kampung Tok Dor in Ajil, where more than 2,000 pills were seized.
She was alone in the house when the police came on Friday.
The teenager later led police to another place in Kuala Besut, about 70km away, where the two men, aged 20 and 25, were arrested.
Terengganu narcotics chief Deputy Supt Amran Ramli said the three were arrested after almost a month of police surveillance.
The drugs were believed to be from a neighbouring country, he said, adding that the police had crippled a large drug peddling syndicate with the arrests.
DSP Amran said the three had been remanded for questioning under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
When the girl was 16, she was sent to a rehab centre to kick her party drug habit.
After she was discharged about a year later, she kept a low profile and gathered a few friends to help her run a drug distribution syndicate.
The police are looking for several more people to help in investigations.
It is learnt that the teenager was the only female in the group and the seizure was the biggest this year of designer drugs in Terengganu.

Unfaitfull Bride Can you say OMG...
I was in awe after reading this s**t!!! So read up.....
This guy has balls the size of church bells!
This is a true story about a recent wedding that took place at Clemson University.
It was in the local newspaper and even Jay Leno mentioned it.
It was a huge wedding with about 300 guests.
After the wedding, at the reception, the groom got up on stage with a microphone to talk to the crowd. He said he wanted to thank everyone for coming, many from long distances, to support them at their wedding. He especially wanted to thank the bride's and his family and to thank his new father-in-law for providing such a lavish reception.
As a token of his deep appreciation he said he wanted to give everyone a special gift just from him.
Taped to the bottom of everyone's chair, including the wedding party, was an envelope.
He said this was his gift to everyone, and asked them to open their envelope.
Inside each manila envelope was an 8x10 glossy of his bride having s*x with the best man.
(The groom had gotten suspicious of them weeks earlier and had hired a private detective to tail them.)
After just standing there, just watching the guests' reactions for a couple of minutes, he turned to the best man and said, "F--- you!"
Then he turned to his bride and said, "F--- you!"
Then he turned to the dumbfounded crowd and said, "I'm outta here."
He had the marriage annulled first thing in the morning.
While most people would have canceled the wedding immediately after finding out about the affair, this guy goes through with the charade, as if nothing were wrong.
WHY?!....REVENGE PEOPLE.....making the bride's parents pay over $32,000 for a 300 guest wedding and reception, and best of all, trashing the bride's and best man's reputations in front of 300 friends and family members.
Do you think we might get a MasterCard "priceless" commercial out of this?
Elegant wedding reception for 300 family members and friends: $32,000.
Wedding photographs commemorating the Occasion: $3,000
Deluxe two week honeymoon accommodations in Maui: $8,500.
The look on everyone's face when they see the 8x10 glossy of the bride humping the best man: Priceless.
There are some things money can't buy, for everything else there's MASTERCARD!
"Life isn't like a bowl of cherries or peaches, it's more like a jar of Jalapenos--what you do today, might burn your a$$ tomorrow
would you have waited to the day of the wedding?
