UK : Calling for emergency medical help I hope none of you have to use this but it sometimes happens and people often panic when the situation occurs which delays the response
If you ever need to get an ambulance for someone (if they are not breathing, having fits or have sustained a serious injury)
1. if their friends/relatives are panicking find someone who is relatively calm, knows the location of where they are
2. get them to dial 999 or 112 on the nearest available phone.
the operator will answer
Quote:
"emergency which service"
state "Ambulance" - now wait as the telecom company operator has to connect to the right NHS trust and transfer some details - do not talk over him/her as it causes confusion (and sometimes results in the operator just calling the Police instead as they are not sure what is happening!)
you will hear something like
Quote:
"Cable & Wireless OAC connecting mobile 07700 900023 to Eastern Ambulance Control"
(this is the operator calling the NHS trust)
"Ambulance Emergency, go ahead caller"
at this point you state clearly the nature of the medical emergency and the location where it has happened. Do not clear down (end the call) until Ambulance Control has confirmed the details and or given any advice.
Be as precise as possible about the location if you are using a mobile as sometimes calls are connected to the neighbouring Ambulance NHS trust - if this happens they do try to hand over the call to the correct area but they need to know where you are!
Then wait with the casualty and if you are at a rave get someone to inform the crew what has happened - in many areas the Police will turn up as well along with the Ambulance (its a safety protocol used in "suspected overdose cases" in case paramedics are attacked).
Don't delay calling for help though because of this; I've never known a rave to be immediately busted because of Ambulance being called and anyway saving a life is worth a rave having to shut down a bit early...
response time can be up to 10-20 minutes in particularly if location is unclear, and/or many involve deployment of a Police helicopter to airlift casualties in remote areas if no Air Ambulance is available.
so it makes sense to avoid these incidents if possible; but at least if people are prepared for them it doesn't look so bad (even at a legal festival there are several Ambulance deployments)
US : Bike shop workers bling up $53 cheapo bike for time trial For non cyclists a time trial is where people ride a very expensive racing bike around a usually circular/elliptical track of known distance as fast as they can. not the sort of thing that appeals to me as you don't see any scenery; and there is a bit of snobbery over having the best equipment and a lot of posing/testosterone
anyway these Yanks in a bike shop have picked up an el cheapo mountain bike and (after swapping some of the components) are going to enter it in the state time trial :)

"unwitting rascism"
Quote:
Police 'neglect' in custody death
Mr Alder, a Falklands veteran, died on 1 April 1998
Four police officers were guilty of the most serious neglect of duty over the death of ex-paratrooper Christopher Alder in 1998, a watchdog has ruled.
The Humberside officers were influenced by "unwitting racism", the Independent Police Complaints Commission said.
Mr Alder, 37, who was black, choked to death at a police station in Hull. CCTV footage showed officers chatting as he gasped for air. Humberside chief constable Tim Hollis apologised for Mr Alder's treatment.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/humber/4848238.stm
seems ridiculous to me to coin this phrase "unwitting racism" it makes no sense to me. you either think people from specific races are inferior, or you dont.
i also find it highly suspicious that the only reason the four pigs didnt get done for manslaughter was because of "inconclusive medical evidence" that to me said the police nicked the evidence, lets face it, its not the first time and it wont be the last. if some one is found "choked to death on his own blood and vomit as he lay on the floor of the police station, without moving, for 11 minutes with his trousers round his ankles." then i would call that murder.
also i really feel for his sister, if you see the before and after photos of her, she went for looking quite conservative and happy, to looking quite militant and stressed, just because she tried to get justice from the police for 8 years. how is that right?
not only that, but the cowards that did it cant even face up to what they've done. "The five police officers involved in the case were "deeply disappointed" by today's IPCC report and "strongly dispute" the findings".
how anyone can trust or respect a police force that acts in this way is beyond my comprehension.
The Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill .......In an almost deserted chamber, the Government proposed an extraordinary Bill that will drastically reduce parliamentary discussion of future laws, a Bill some constitutional experts are already calling “the Abolition of Parliament Bill”.
Carrying ID cards could be made compulsory, smoking in one’s own home could be outlawed and the definition of terrorism altered to make ordinary political protest punishable by life imprisonment. Nor will the Human Rights Act save us since the Bill makes no exception for it.
The Bill gives ministers the power to 'amend repeal or replace' any law passed by Parliament without consulting Parliament. The only limitations are that new crimes cannot be created if the penalty is greater than two years in prison and that it cannot increase taxation. But any other law can be changed, no matter how important.
The Bill, bizarrely, even applies to itself, so that ministers could propose orders to remove the limitations about two-year sentences and taxation. It also includes a few desultory questions (along the lines of “am I satisfied that I am doing the right thing?”) that ministers have to ask themselves before proceeding, all drafted subjectively so that court challenges will fail, no matter how preposterous the minister’s answer.
The potential consequences if this bill gets through parliament are disastrous and an affront to the values of democracy, yet most people know absolutely nothing about it.
The bill can be found in full here:

If our local MPs resist it, we have a chance of fighting it.
I have written to my M.P about this.
I suggest that everyone reading this do the same. Please follow the link below, it will take you 2 mins.

april sees a triple dose of quality electronics with a dj set from mark broom plus a skam double header, with rob hall and mr 76ix playing live. mark fits the sequence vision nicely. although he’s best known for his hard techno sets we’ve asked him to do something outside of the genre for april, so expect something a bit different. rob first played sequence in 2004 and has played everywhere in his time, even providing dj support for autechre on their 2005 untilted tour. and if all this isn’t enough for you we also have the mighty mr 76ix on the bill. and he’s proper amazing live. enough said!

Six retired Irishmen were playing poker Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when Paddy
Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest and drops dead at the table.
Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing
standing up.
Michael O'Conner looks around and asks, "Oh, me boys, someone got's to
tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?"
They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to
be discrete be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.
"Discrete??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion
is me middle name. Leave it to me."
Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs.
Murphy answers and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares: "Your husband just lost $500 and is afraid to come home."
"Tell him to drop dead!", says Murphy's wife.
