stay safe and end gender violence – or watch this scene self-destruct… by now most of you will have seen reports coming in from Europe - one young girl raped at a Tek, another dead in dubious circumstances in a Paris squat.
Here in Britain, just down the road from me, our Crown Court is surrounded by reporters - the case being heard is the kidnap, serious sexual assault and murder of two young teenage girls (the Mary Ann Leneghan case). The two victims are known to raver friends of mine and were "happy go lucky girls who liked parties and music" - who simply just "got in with the wrong crowd".
And none of this is new. All these bad things were happening in the early 90s in the "old skool days" - but we didn't have the Internet to report the incidents; and worse still a lot of people were in denial, and victims too traumatised to speak widely about what was going on
Some will argue "this is just normal societys problem" - but thats no excuse. In fact in "normal society" those who abuse women/girls are more likely to be dealt with, as people who are not involved in things deemed illegal by wider society are obviously more likely to go to cops and report stuff.
There is a culture of denial, and worse one of acceptance of gender violence on the "free party" scene.
its unregulated nature sadly attracts predators, worse still a patriarchal attitude has developed - I've known so called "radical activists" to claim straight from the heart that "women shouud know their place", and lots of girls in squats/protest camps etc were harrassed by blokes - the "hippy girls are easy" attitude (George Monbiot mentions this problem in one of this reports).
Some blokes speak up against violence, but often its simply from a "macho perspective" because they want an excuse to beat up the outside predators (whilst keeping the women for themselves - a bit like chimpanzees) - I am aware of incidents where vigilantés who don't even know the circumstances have dealt out punishment beatings when the female victims (and even their partners) have in fact wanted to have stuff dealt with properly by cops and courts!
Another bad development is couples having their domestic arguments in the middle of raves - of course couples may not always agree but surely this stuff is for sorting out in the home, not a public arena? Often it just seems like it is the male trying to exert dominance over the female.
I always thought people originally got into the underground rave scene to escape attitudes like this; after all you can see it in every commercial venue and on the high street, but thankfully cops / bouncers / CCTV ops often intervene before people are too badly hurt.
Even at free parties incidents are usually stopped - but uninvolved and uninformed people take sides without the accountability that traditional authority figures have - and of course it ruins the atmosphere for everyone when these things happen in a party zone.
And sadly, often the argument carries on where no witnesses are about (such as in the bedrooms of a squat or shared house) and far worse things happen.
This must stop. the girls/women today do "not" have a victim mentality - they are prepared to stand up for themselves and/or use conventional authorities if need be - but why should it have to come to this?
Some girls I know now are so disillusioned by the way things are going they no longer attend raves (unlicensed or commercial) for their own and in some cases their partners safety/sanity - or attend them less often - with every girl who stops raving thats one less person to support the cause.
And why should they support a community which is being taken over by "angry young men" and treats them as second class citizens?
Further, the female police officers, social workers and many other authority figures / professionals who often end up picking up the pieces of gender violence on our scene will think
"these so called "autonomous communities" are dangerous to girls/women. They should be closed down or more strictly regulated".
it may no longer be "cool" for a straight male like myself to speak about "respecting women" (people think I am a sandal-wearing 80s hippy!) - but I do not care about fashion labels when this is attacking the existence of this scene.
its worth remembering the party community is a "living organism" - and thus needs both genders involved to survive and grow...
Anybody else get LOST?! I got LOST last sat at The Bridge. First time ive been out to a full night of Techno. Very good music. Iwas a bit put off by a few bad mixes and jumping decks, (its the strongest agrument AGAINST cd mixing..... 4 jumps in the space of an hour is not good.)
I was suprised by the amount of DJ watchers... I konw it was Jeff Mills, but there was alot of people not dancing!!
It sounds like im slagging it off.... not at all... very good night!!
Anybody else go? Was this a typical Techno night?
Roll on the D&B and HipHop at Jacks tomorrow!!
Cocaine use on the increase UK's cocaine use 'as high as US'
The level of cocaine use in the UK is as high as in the US, a report by the UN's anti-drug body has said.
The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) report said 2% of Britons used cocaine, and the UK had one of Europe's highest rates of cannabis use.
It also said methamphetamine was emerging as the world's biggest drug problem but use remained low in the UK.
The government said it accepted the findings, while the Tories accused ministers of failing on drugs.
'Confusing message'
The annual report on global drug use said the UK had one of Europe's highest rates of cannabis use, alongside the Czech Republic, France, Ireland and Switzerland, in 2005.
INCB chief Professor Hamid Ghodse said the government's recent downgrading of cannabis in the UK had been a mistake.
He said the UK had historically had a high level of drug use, but that the downgrading was confusing and sent out the wrong message.
Shadow home secretary David Davis said the UK was the "cannabis capital of Europe" because of government policy failings over the declassification of the drug.
He also told BBC Radio Five Live that the government was failing to tackle the problem of hard drugs, and that users should be given a choice of a long rehabilitation course, or "criminal sanctions".
"Drugs are cheaper on the streets of this country than they have ever been," he said.
Professor Ghodse warned methamphetamine - now one of the most prevalent drugs in the US - posed the biggest threat.
Also know as crystal meth, it is a synthetic stimulant which allows users to stay awake for days.
'Positive references'
"It has not yet affected that much of Western European countries and the UK but, as we know, as drug misuse occurs in North America sooner or later it gets here," he said.
"Methamphetamine is today's problem drug. We think that it is extremely worrying.
"It is one of the drugs which can be very rapidly addictive. And it has lots of complications."
In 2005, British authorities seized more heroin than any other European country, the report also said.
It listed other strategies the UK had undertaken to combat drug use, including improvements to the way people are treated for drug addiction.
A Home Office spokesman said it was pleased to see the report's "many positive references to measures taken under the government's strategy on drugs".
He said record numbers of people entered treatment last year for addiction to class A drugs.
"The British Crime Survey shows that the number of 16-24 year olds that have ever taken class A drugs has fallen by 24% between 1998 and 2003/4, and that the use of class A drugs in the past year has stabilised," he said.
On methamphetamine, he said: "Work is under way to improve monitoring of its prevalence, and to make domestic production of the drug harder, while education about the risks associated with the drug has been reinforced.
"These risks are reflected in a five-year penalty for possession, and 14 years for supply."

I've seen an increase in its use among friends as well as it is far cheaper and easier to get hold of than it used to be.. It was always seen as the "elite" drug and ecstacy was the main drug of choice but recently certainly up here in Scotland there has been a drought of ecstacy and all that people seem to be able to get is coke... not a wise choice in my mind.. i've seen too many people get taken over by it and turn into not very nice people as a result...

Men fined after illegal rave
East Anglian Daily Times
10 February 2006 | 07:30
TWO men who helped organise an illegal rave which continued for three days until finally being stopped by police in riot gear have been fined a total of £3,500.
Daniel Crook and David Howard appeared before magistrates in Ipswich yesterday where they admitted a single charge of being concerned in the organisation of unlicensed public entertainment.
The huge rave was held at Ramsholt, near Woodbridge, on August 28, 29 and 30 last year and caused disruption for thousands of villagers.
Crook, 29, of Bullocks Lane, Caister on Sea, was fined £2,000 at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court for his part in the illegal event and was ordered to pay £35 costs.
Howard, 21, of Bakers Road, Norwich, was fined £1,500 and also ordered to pay costs of £35.
Both men were made subject of a depravation order which will see the permanent confiscation of items such as speakers, camouflage tarpaulin, scaffolding, generators and fuel containers.
An estimated 1,000 people turned up at the illegal rave and dozens of complaints about loud music were made to a council's out of hours' emergency service.
