any old J14 pics? Does anyone have any pictures of the j14 parties from late ninties? Would love to see some of the old faces including myself having a good stomp. I got a few but never really bothered taking a camera as i had other things on my mind :)
positive benefits of immigration in my city are clear to see! As someone who has been short sighted since primary school days, I have virtually had a "season ticket" to nearly every optician in the city at one time or another... (if I did not wear my contact lenses or spectacles I would not be able to see this screen to type this message!)
Over the years, (and particularly since the 1990s) - I have noticed how often the optician who treats me is originally from outside the UK. Most seem to be from India - although others are from Eastern Europe.
This is hardly surprising; there is a long standing tradition of medical professionals immigrating from India to the UK since the 1970s; and many skilled opticians and optometrists come from ex-USSR countries.
Not only were modern contact lenses invented in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s; its fairly obvious an empire which spent years involved in surveillance operations would ensure that the personnel involved could see well!
Also the technology for contact lenses was a good generator of foreign exchange money (still needed even in Soviet days) - and in the USSR and its satellites all citizens of all genders were expected to peform some kind of national service, the services wouldn't want an otherwise good soldier being unable to make a surveillance report or fire accurately on a target because his (or her!) bins had steamed up........
At one point I had some concerns that drivers in Bangalore and Mumbai were routinely colliding into brick walls, rickshaws and random road-wandering cows because all their opticians were "over here" - but an Indian work colleague ensures me that there are still plenty of opticians who choose to stay in their native countries; and indeed many who work in both Western and Eastern nations throughout their careers (and transfer the skills they learn across the world by teaching others).
And this is not a case of "people taking "our" jobs" - in the opticians there are other white British staff, but it does seem that in many cases the immigrants are doing the more skillled jobs, because they have studied for the qualifications, whilst many of the native population (including British Asians and those from other people ethnic groups who were born in the UK) tend not to choose to study complicated scientific subjects (of which optometry is certainly one!)
At the same time over 60% of the British population require vision correction - as we often drive vehicles, ride bikes or do close work at computers good vision is vital. if we don't want to do these difficult jobs, someone has to - why should it matter what nation they come from?
Freestylers at the rocket festival Sorry but its got to be said..... THEY WERE SHIT. I was really dissapointed. The rumour when we got there is that they wont play unless they had a 5star hotel....(in the mountains???????) and then told they were playing at 2am. We wenty to sleep before so had some energy and was woken at 4am and they still hadnt been on. After waiting another 2-3 hours by which time had run out of beer, was coming down on the mdma, and missed most of krafty kuts, they came on to a dissapointed and angry crowd, only to play a half assed 45 min set bigging themselves up and wanting to get the crowd to cheer for tyhem when they really should have workked harder as they had just let us all down! They didnt encore if i remember right and when we didnt all cheer the MC Surreal blatantly couldnt be arsed. If you aks me they shouydnt have bothered coming if that was their attitude! And shouldnt have been paid either, esp as the rocket didnt attract as many people and they needed all the cash they could get they should have kept the cash they paid to them, and i dont even know if i could bring myself to play their tunes any more after realising they are complete TWATS!
anyone else agree?

Operation Hartley continues to stamp out westy raves
New powers to curb raves
Police are preparing for their annual crackdown on illegal raves in the Westcountry, armed with powers to confiscate stereos and take revellers to court. Officers will soon set up barricades around the disused Smeatharpe airfield near Honiton, East Devon, which three years ago was overrun by revellers who had been turned away from the Glastonbury Festival. Sites across the region traditionally targeted by organisers of illegal events have also been identified by police.
Devon and Cornwall, Avon and Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Police have been scouring the Internet for any mention of illegal raves in a bid to stop rural beauty spots being invaded by illicit summer gatherings.
Any information will be used to launch an action plan to prevent such events from taking place.
Armed with the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003, officers will be able to disband gatherings once 20 or more people have congregated in an open or indoor area. Previously, they were unable to take action to force people to move unless at least 100 revellers had gathered.
Under section 14 of the Act, the senior police officer at the scene can prevent people from attending the gathering if they believe it may cause serious distress to the local community.
Ignoring this direction, or returning to the land within the next week, are both offences liable to three months' imprisonment.
As part of the crackdown, codenamed Operation Pell, police will also ask local farmers, landowners and residents to inform them of any suspicious characters in their area who might be assessing its viability as a rave site.
Inspector Norman Amey, the officer in charge of the operation in Devon and Cornwall, said: "We have the powers to stop these illegal gatherings and seize equipment.
"We will do so if necessary to protect the rights and lifestyles of the local community as well as preventing serious injury and hazards to health of those attending."

not really telling us anything we hadn't worked out, but i thought it was an interesting choice of second paragraph
sig image with tracking details on other forums I've seen people with a tagline that contains an image of a cartoon rat holding a sign board, on which users browser details come up (such as "you are using isp ntli.net and your browser is mozilla firefox...)
any idea where you get this image from?
Partylines – security warning Thames Valley Police have finally started ringing partylines as soon as they open to find out where events are - instead of waiting until the locals complain (which sometimes means that parties are left alone for some considerable time or even not visited at all!)
One local crew got visited and requested to "shut down their partyline to prevent further people arriving!"
Not sure why there has been this sudden change in tactic, particularly as various partylines have been all over the internet and printed on flyers for years now - I think it could be as simple as the cops realising that their Airwave radio will dial civilian telephone numbers as well....12
22.00 - 23.00 DNA DJ-Team,
(Dione aka Enoid & Dr. Z-Vago aka Negative A)
23.00 - 00.00 Partyraiser
00.00 - 00.30 Angerfist *Live*
00.30 - 01.30 Deceptix & Staz
01.30 - 02.30 Lunatic & Miss Hysteria
02.30 - 03.45 Tieum vs The Rapist
03.45 - 04.30 The Vizitor
