EU : pictures of Peaceful European borders as at 2016. I didn't realise the Schengen agreement was over 30 years old; I always thought it was from the late 90s or 2000s although that may well be the time when the European nations actually started removing border control infrastructure (as opposed to just idealistically talking about it).
The pictures in the link below below appear to have been taken by someone looking for pretty/arty shots and omit many more equally peaceful (in political terms) border areas but maybe not as pretty (due to traffic, roads etc) - such as DE/DK border along the Flensborgvej which I was looking at a few weeks ago and wondering whether it is legal to ride an e-bike across there (assuming you have correct ID documents valid for the EU and the E-bike is compliant, which mine is)
There is a DE/DK border shown in some field with a sheep in it (presumably the eartags, registration and sheperding procedures are closely linked between DE and DK, as if the sheep walks just 3 metres it is in another country!)
How long Europe will remain like this is another matter entirely (although UK is the only country at present to actually vote itself out of the EU and never signed the Schengen agreeement in the first place there are other countries nearer the Middle East where things aren't as peaceful).

UK : East : ‘Terrorists’ comment to Muslim shop worker lands Ipswich man in court The penalties here seem fair and the offender does appear to show remorse - turns out he is himself an immigrant to Britain and appears unaware that in British English "booze" is widely used as a slang term for any alcohol, not just cheap/strong stuff - the use of this term is not a comment on his drinking habits.
She wouldn't even have known about his previous alcohol problems, and nor would anyone else had he not kicked off to such an extent he ended up before the beak!
Also if the young woman at the shop cannot be named in Court due to her age, she is
UK : SE : Boomtown winter gathering cancelled following incidents. A work colleagues son was caught up in the aftermath of the fire (as the car him and his friends had travelled in was destroyed) - thankfully he was unharmed; and all credit to Hants Fire and Rescue for preventing the blaze spreading to a level where it endangered lives. It is understandable the Boomtown organisers are not continuing with the winter event; the stress of dealing with this must be enormous and the insurance costs are likely to rise as a result.
The currently available info about this years death hints that it it is unlikely to be drug-related and is more likely to be the result of the young woman having a pre-existing serious medical condition (there are quite a few that cause otherwise healthy, non drug using young adults to suddenly keel over, especially during sports or recreation).
I am not a doctor so can't explain properly what these are but suggest that young adults do try and see their GP every so often for checkups (especially if they are leaving the family home and moving in to shared accomodation or University halls) - there is similar advice elsewhere from NHS England following outbreaks of measles across festivals in England.
I have my own personal concerns over multiple safety risks to young participants inadvertantly triggered by the current trend towards multi-day festivals as opposed to traditional raves and EDM events (although these are IMO more linked to road safety issues cased by the abysmal transport infrastructure of the UK than concerns over drug use).
The incident count might seem excessive (although crimes and other incidents were down in comparison to previous years) but if the UK authorities insist on balkanising music events into obscure bits of the country WTF do they expect? UK youth are still fairly affluent and have easy access to cars, they are not simply going to give up if their local rave events (both licensed and otherwise) are constantly locked off..

Cig Packets… Just bought a 20 deck of B+H silver today and they've started putting the pictures of body parts on them already. On mine, there's a picture of someones head and cross section of their neck with throat cancer.. and next to it in red writing it says "Smoking causes a slow and painful death" .. was pretty disgusting..
I didn't think they were gonna start doing it this soon.. I thought at least next year.. but hey =/ Apparently they've done it on Mayfair cigs aswel but I dunno.
however, I don't think it'll stop me smoking. I mean, it'll put me off buying cigarettes but I can just buy them and not look at the images.. They are pretty rank..Has anyone else seen them?
If they're gonna go to such extreme measures to stop people smoking, why don't they just ban cigarettes altogether? Well, that's not gonna stop everyone smoking.. But a fair few y'know? But they'll never do that...Instead, they'll just put disgusting images on the packets.. :you_crazy123

hey everyone Hello people, hoping to make some new friends and contacts. I have eclectic musical tastes prefering alternative stuff to chart (I haven't heard any grime I like yet-I like grunge, metal, punk, gabba, industrial and dark drum n bass like panacea, dark acid is ok so is underground garage-I tolerate house n hiphop).
US : MA : "Buying duty free snout in Massachusetts…" :D My sister is travelling there for work and has offered to get me a carton of cigarettes - do they have duty free shops there and if so does anyone know the rough prices and what brands they sell? I did try and look at the only versions of the shops but they ask for your flight details!
I understand that Lucky Strike Filters are not sold in USA any more (BAT actually make them in Germany, Hungary and other European nations) - only the unfiltered which can be expensive and hard to get in some states and a carton of them is likely to be much worse for my insides. Do they still have Camel filters and are they still called that? (according to kids on redditt there are about 5 different types of Camel still sold in USA, in UK we only get the light ones and they cost around $14 a pack!)
*Snout == British slang for cigarettes and tobacco, especially amongst older generations in London and SE Engand and those who might have once been to jail or regularly encounter people who have)
US : Eco-activists develop fish tracking apps Interesting read - didn't realise that mislabelled fish was so common in USA.
Not heard of it happening as much in Northern Europe; but the EU may well be much stricter about this (it was one reason many in UK coastal areas voted for Brexit as there has been 40 years of paranoia that other coastal nations are "stealing the British Fish" - and there is already loads of coastal radar and AIS monitoring by Coastguards due to paranoia about Soviet U-boats. Also Europe-wide consumers seem more prepared to pay for ethically caught and correctly labelled fish; as that can stop the folk who eat them getting ill)

IN / BD : Indian elephant washed by floods 1000km to Bangladesh and rescued… This also gives some idea of how harsh the weather can be in South Asia. Impressive that she has been rescued alive; was surprised though IN don't let BD keep her as BD is relatively short of elephants and a healthy female would be valuable.
Hoiwever I am not a zoology prof and plenty who are in both countries have been involved in the rescue; it might be better for her to return to be returned to the Indian herd.
Indian Railways are actually fully equipped to transport elephants, tigers, leopards, monkeys and all sorts else along with the humans (they do get separate carriages though guarded by vets at each end)....

AU : Archivists preserving 1980s digital content Two interesting articles (I am currently working on a project related to backups and archiving for business continuity purposes) - although many of the Techdirt commenters are so caught up with ranting against copyright etc and arguing about various tech issues and the (obvious) political content of her writing that they completely miss the point that Ms Greer (now in late middle age and may well be suffering health problems) is actively co-operating with the Australian profs whom she has given the archives to..

NL : This is a serious listening post… Check this out (also impressive is that a chap of 55 is into trance and uses a trance track for his intro!).
The set he uses mostly for marine HF is originally from Soviet East Germany and was advanced even by Western standards (it is still a good set today).
